French police officers have been instructed to drastically limit arrests and detentions until July 14, except in cases where suspects are caught in the act, due to prosecutors' offices being overwhelmed by a backlog of cases.

According to a police officer cited by French media, the order states: "No more arrests until July 14, while rape and sexual assault cases are processed."

The reported measure means police and gendarmes are being asked to avoid operations likely to generate new arrests while prosecutors work through existing files.

The development comes as France faces record immigration levels and growing concerns over crime, prison overcrowding, and the capacity of the justice system.
