My two cents, which I recognize no one asked for.
⚠️THIS IS VERY LONG ⚠️
In this comment, you, yourself, have given an extremely reasonable explanation for why someone might follow and unfollow problematic people without it meaning they are problematic themselves.
So, if we, collectively as a society, can fathom a world where someone follows problematic people but doesn't agree with their words or actions, then why are some of us automatically assuming Joss is an evil vile human being for allegedly following problematic people and then allegedly unfollowing them?
Why are we not assuming that if he did follow and unfollow these people, it was bc he didn't want to hurt anyone or cause any further misunderstandings bc he doesn't agree with those problematic people's words or actions?
Why is it not an automatic response to do independent research to see what kind of public figure Joss has been the past decade so that we can come to an informed conclusion on whether it makes sense to brand him as a straight, homophobic, racist transphobic right wing bigot?
Why are so many people refusing to look at the decade worth of behaviors, likes, retweets, shared posts, content, actions, charity work and words already avaliable to us where Joss is concerned?
What is him getting online and apologizing for following and unfollowing people truly going to do and why is that more important to people wheb it cones to telling us about his character and morals and ideologiea than who he's actively been the past decade?
Keeping in mind that a person can say anything. A person's actions will always be more telling of who they are than what they say.
More importantly, what evidence and genuine proof have any of you actually seen of him following these problematic people? Have you actually see any proof. Verified unedited screenshots? A singular screen recording showing him following all of these people? or did you just see people saying he followed them and you simply decided to believe it without verifying that it was actually true?
And if you haven't seen any evidence of him following these people then why are you asking him to come online and make an official statement of apology for something you have no proof he ever even did? Surely, that wouldn't make any sense.
Has it occured to anyone that he's not apologized or made a statement explaining anything because there simply isn't anything for him to apologize for or explain. I feel it is necessary to point out that just because you want an explanation does bot mean you are owed an explanation.
Also I do think we need to be honest about online culture when it comes to celebrities apologizing. Let's say Joss did make a statement apologizing and explaining why he followed and unfollowed those people. The only take away would have been him admitting he followed those people. His explanation would be dismissed as "damage control". There would no grace for him taking rwaponsibility and making swift and decisive changes to correct himself.
Arguably, had he come online to deny the claims altogether he would have recieved even worse hate and backlash, he would have been branded a liar who doesn't take responsibility for his actions. His name would be synonymous with dishonesty.
There is also the fact that GMMTV has made official statements for other artists who have similar allegations and even, very recently, terminating one of their contracts. Yet with Joss no official statement was ever made.
All of this to say, prioritize independent research so you can have an informed opinion and make informed conclusions, instead of simply believing everything you hear online and then demanding explanations when the answers you seek are right in front of you.
