Recognized as a true prodigy, Tao would go on to study at university before his teens and eventually become one of the most brilliant mathematicians in the world. Today, Tao is a professor at UCLA and a Fields Medalist, often called the "Mozart of Math" for his extraordinary ability to see patterns and solutions across many areas of mathematics.

Tao's "pure math" research isn't just about theory. Discoveries in areas like harmonic analysis and number theory have led to algorithms that make MRI scans up to 10 times faster, cutting down patient time in the machine and improving medical efficiency.

Recently, the federal government suspended hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding to UCLA, directly affecting Tao's ability to focus on his research.
