Listening to @cbivanhoe's patient of 17 years during "Persons with the lived experience of spasticity" session at Spasticity X. What an inspiring session to learn patient's perspectives. #TherapeuticAlliance
A supreme honor working with Dr. Kothari on the special issue #DoC in PM&R Clinics of North America @ClinicsReviews

Extremely grateful for all authors' contributions!
Appreciate the opportunity! @BCEapenMD
One of our #DisordersofConsciousness patients was featured in USA Today this morning. Hope her story inspires others and increases awareness of nontraumatic brain injury.

We need more stories like this shared/published to increase awareness of good outcomes that are possible after severe brain injury. Falsely assumed poor prognosis and futility in rehab can limit patients' recovery potential more than their brain injury itself.
Alison's daughter sustained a severe traumatic brain injury as the result of an ATV accident, and doctors thought she may never recover. The experience of becoming a caregiver has resulted in Alison gaining a new perspective. Read her full story here: https://t.co/WRDL3AkhTl
First time visiting Capitol Hill to advocate for the field of #Phyiatry and our patient population. What an incredible and eye opening experience! @AAPhysiatrists
Great day on Capitol Hill advocating for #physiatry patients and colleagues!
Thank you to AAP's Public Policy Committee for your leadership and the legislators for meeting with us and listening.

What is the best test to detect consciousness in the ICU? Behavioral exam? fMRI? EEG? Or is it TMS-EEG?
We discuss the potential for TMS-EEG measurements of brain complexity to improve care for patients with severe brain injuries in the ICU.

Hot off the press! The best birthday present arrived just on time 🎁 It was a great privilege to work with this incredible group of people to advocate for persons with #DisordersofConsciousness!
Specialized intensive inpatient rehabilitation is crucial and time-sensitive for DoC https://t.co/MNiH7bjyuu
Key messages:
1) Persons with DoC can make measurable functional improvements with intensive rehabilitation, measured by and beyond the standard scales.
1. People with DoC make measurable functional improvement.
2. The earlier they come to inpatient rehab, the more functional improvement they make.
3. Rehab is equally important for DoC caused by any etiology.
4. Chronic DoC should not be overlooked. #TIRRDoCOutcomePaper2023
Couldn’t ask for a better colleague and friend to learn from @I_B_I_A World Congress on Brain Injury in #Dublin@JeanWooMD talking about debunking the idea that #DoC patients don’t get better. Work started by @BeiZhangMD coming to fruition. 🙌🏼 #TIRR#rehabilitation
A phrase that struck me hard during #DisordersofConsciousness Assessment and Treatment Abstract session @I_B_I_A.
"Don't save us, then leave us."
Thanks for the great talk @McCannAE16 on caregiving for people with prolonged DoC!
My esteemed colleague, Dr. Katherine O'Brien @ko400 sharing #DisordersofConsciousness care in the US during Global Analysis session at #IBIA. Definitely eye opening to hear about different healthcare systems and clinical challenges faced in other countries.
Doctors at a major US insurance company deny tens of thousands of claims a month without even looking at patients’ files.
“We literally click & submit,” a former Cigna doctor told @ProPublica & @Capitol_Forum. “It takes all of 10 seconds to do 50 at a time.”
The inside story 🧵
“Some people say that what I did changed the world,” she wrote, “But really, I simply refused to accept what I was told about who I could be. And I was willing to make a fuss about it.” #RIPJudyHeumann
