Mark Carney’s exclusion from President Donald Trump’s pivotal White House summit on August 18, 2025, marks a low point in his tenure as Canada’s Prime Minister. The “Coalition of the Willing,” attended by leaders from the UK, France, Germany, Finland, the EU, NATO, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was a critical forum to shape peace in Ukraine. Yet Carney was conspicuously absent, denied even a virtual seat at the table. This snub is a stark indictment of his eroded international influence, driven by strained U.S.-Canada relations and his misalignment with Trump’s diplomatic priorities. While Carney scrambled to stay relevant with a parallel virtual meeting with allies, perhaps hoping they’d urge Trump to include him, his absence underscores a broader failure.

Canada has committed $20 billion to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, funding tanks, artillery, and humanitarian aid, outpacing many summit attendees on a per-capita basis. This substantial contribution underscores Canada’s stake in the conflict. Yet, at home, our military languishes with outdated rifles and vehicles unfit for modern combat, while privates earn a meager $40,000 annually, insufficient amid rising costs. A recent $2 billion pay increase is a belated, inadequate fix for years of neglect. Carney’s prioritization of foreign aid over domestic military needs exposes a critical misstep, undermining Canada’s credibility as a global player.

The primary reasons for Carney’s exclusion lie in his mishandling of U.S.-Canada relations and failure to align with Trump’s pragmatic approach. Elected in March 2025 on an anti-Trump platform, Carney branded U.S. tariffs a “betrayal” and positioned himself as a defiant critic, alienating a key ally. Trade tensions, including Trump’s threats of tariffs on Canadian goods, have soured bilateral ties, with negotiations faltering by July 2025 when Trump reportedly stopped returning Carney’s calls. His technocratic style, honed at the Bank of England and UN, clashes with Trump’s deal-driven diplomacy, rendering Canada peripheral in a U.S.-led summit focused on European security. Carney’s diminished global clout, with critics noting Canada’s irrelevance under his leadership, further sealed his fate.

Compounding these failures is Carney’s refusal to curb personal attacks on Trump by his MPs and associates, another nail in the exclusion coffin. Former MP Charlie Angus called Trump a “sexual predator,” a reckless jab with no diplomatic merit. Another MP mocked Trump’s debate performance with “He choked!” Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized Trump’s “unpredictability,” questioning his daily coherence. Has anyone seen Carney publicly or privately reprimand these attacks? I’ve found no evidence of him urging restraint—no statement, no directive, nothing. Have you? This inaction signals complicity or weakness, further eroding his standing with Trump.

NATO’s Mark Rutte praised the summit as a model of pragmatic leadership, omitting Canada entirely. Carney’s virtual meeting that day, where he claimed to “coordinate closely” with allies, was a transparent bid to salvage influence, possibly hoping figures like Starmer or Macron would advocate for his inclusion. His concurrent meeting with Doug Ford was a domestic distraction, not a strategic move. Public sentiment is harsh: “Carney’s greatest feat is not being invited,” one X post declared, while another labeled him “diplomatically irrelevant.”

Carney’s exclusion is a national setback, not just a personal failure. Canada’s $20 billion investment in Ukraine demands a voice, yet our soldiers struggle with inadequate resources. Carney’s mishandling of U.S. relations, misalignment with Trump’s priorities, and failure to curb divisive rhetoric have sidelined Canada. His virtual posturing suggests desperation, not leadership. Until he addresses these shortcomings and prioritizes our military’s needs, Canada will remain a diminished force, $20 billion poorer and significantly less relevant. #Carney must act decisively or step aside.
