The verse on the mug was written to people who would die in exile.

Jeremiah 29:11.

You've seen it on graduation cards. Coffee cups. Bios.

"I know the plans I have for you."

Here's what's around it.

Jerusalem, 597 BC.

Babylon has already come. King Jehoiachin, the queen mother, the officials, and the craftsmen marched off to a foreign city.

Jeremiah 29:2.

Jeremiah stays behind and writes them a letter.

And the letter opens with the news nobody wanted.

Build houses. Plant gardens. Find wives for your sons.
You're not coming home.

Jeremiah 29:5-6.

Pray for Babylon. The empire that took you.

Jeremiah 29:7.

Then the timeline.

Seventy years.

Jeremiah 29:10.

Most of the adults holding that letter would be buried in Babylon before it came true.

Meanwhile, a prophet named Hananiah was telling everyone it would all be over in two years.

Jeremiah 28:3.

That's the comfortable version. The quick fix. The one that sounds like the mug.

God called it a lie.

Jeremiah 28:15.

Now back to verse 11.

The "you" is plural. Not one graduate. A whole nation in the wrong place.

The word on the mug is "prosper." The Hebrew word is shalom.

Not money. Not a career. Wholeness. Peace. The kind you can have in Babylon.

And the verses after it aren't about a future at all.

They're about seeking Him. With all your heart. Where you are.

Jeremiah 29:12-13.

Read the whole letter, and the promise gets bigger, not smaller.

God didn't say the exile was an accident. He said He sent them.

Jeremiah 29:4.

And that He was coming back for them.

Jeremiah 29:14.

So here's the honest version of the mug.

God is not promising you the job. The house. The life you sketched out.

He's promising something harder.

That when the thing you feared has already happened

when you're standing in the place you swore you'd never be

He still knows exactly what He's doing.

Build the house.

Plant the garden.

Seek Him there.

Where Are We Gonna Stand?
A young 17-year-old boy was shopping in St. Cloud, MN, at a sports store, called Shields. The cashier was a lady who was wearing a headscarf. The 17-year-old was wearing a necklace with a cross on it. She told him he would have to put his cross under his shirt because it offended her. He told her he would not do that. Then he told her that he thought she should take her headscarf off. She then called for the manager. The manager came out and told the 17-year-old to just put his cross under his shirt and everything would be fine. The boy again refused to do so and at that point he left the items he had intended to purchase and walked out.
Several customers who had been in line behind him had heard the conversation and also left their carts full of items and walked out of the store!! KUDOS TO THE 17-YEAR-OLD!!!
We all know we are in some very changing times, and given the same circumstances, I pray we would all have the courage this young lad had. We spent a few minutes talking about the challenge we are facing for our first amendment right of religious freedom. (I have to wonder what's next? Are 'they' going to try to ban the jewelry store owners from selling

Everyone keeps talking about the "male loneliness epidemic," but nobody seems interested in asking what happened to spaces where men could just be around other men.

And here's something people don't like acknowledging:

Simply adding women to a male group changes the social dynamic.

Men behave differently around women than they do when it's just the guys. The jokes change. The conversations change. The shit-talking changes. Guys become more guarded. Certain subjects disappear completely. Men start filtering themselves because the social consequences of saying the wrong thing are different in a mixed group.

That happens even BEFORE anyone complains.

Then add another layer. Once women enter traditionally male spaces, there is often an expectation that the existing atmosphere should become more accommodating to feminine sensitivities.

That's too crude.
That's offensive.
That joke went too far.
That's immature.
That makes me uncomfortable.
Why do you guys act like this?

Eventually the men aren't interacting naturally anymore. They're interacting through a filter.

And that's the entire fucking point people miss.

A male space isn't just a building with a "MEN ONLY" sign on the door. It's an environment where men feel comfortable dropping the social filter and interacting with other men in ways they often DON'T when women are present.

Change the composition and you can change the behavior. Change the behavioral expectations and you change it even further.

Eventually you've destroyed the very atmosphere that made it a male social space in the first place, even if men technically still gather there.

Then society turns around and asks:

"Why are men so lonely?"

Maybe because we spent decades treating exclusively male social spaces as suspicious, exclusionary or outdated while simultaneously telling men they desperately need stronger friendships with other men.

And the irony is incredible.

Men constantly hear: "Leave women alone. Respect women's spaces. Women don't exist for your benefit."

Okay.

Then afford men the same courtesy.

Sometimes men want to hang out with other men precisely BECAUSE there are no women around.

Not because they hate women.
Not because they're plotting against women.
Not because women are inferior.

Because the dynamic is different.

Men should be allowed to have that.

After a vicious attack on our ears, we had to call the cops. Instead of investigating a way to facilitate better dialogue. She incites real violence (I consider ear piercing sounds violence).

Cowbells are not a joke at ear range. Tests have measured them around one hundred ten decibels at two feet, and livestock bells hit ninety to one hundred thirteen decibels about eight inches away. That is chainsaw territory. NIOSH says eighty-five decibels is the limit for an eight-hour day. At one hundred ten, safe time drops to about one or two minutes. Right next to the ear, even a short blast can cause pain, ringing, and permanent hearing loss. Hair cells in the ear do not grow back. Unwanted high-decibel noise in someone’s ear is not “dialogue.” It is a known injury risk, and it should be treated that way in an ordinance.
