Salvador : 82 homicides en 2025. France : 975.

Par habitant, les comptes officiels sont presque identiques : 1,36 pour 100 000 au Salvador (82 sur 6 029 976 habitants, recensement 2024), 1,41 en France (975 sur 69 082 000, Insee).

Sauf que le Salvador ne compte ni les corps des fosses clandestines, ni les morts aux mains de la police, ni les morts en prison, selon InSight Crime. Ça ne dit pas que la baisse est fausse. Ça dit qu'elle est comptée étroit.

Combien de morts faut-il ajouter aux 82 pour que les deux pays comptent pareil ?

United States: Bank of America admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act.

Treasury says the bank failed to report on time more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions. Over $1 billion of it touched priority risks, including Chinese money laundering networks.

The penalties announced Oct. 13: more than $1.21 billion in total. The bank's latest annual net income: about $30.5 billion.

Treasury wrote that the bank "prioritized its revenues."

The bill: roughly 4% of one year's profit.

The real headline is buried in that list.

"Lincoln in the Bardo" opens at the Met tomorrow, Oct. 19, and Missy Mazzoli becomes the first woman to have a world premiere there.

The Met opened in 1883. That's 143 years of world premieres before one went to a woman composer.

The production has puppets, pyrotechnics and a live horse. The horse is not the most surprising part.

Real drop, and a record. Now the line almost nobody is quoting.

Same INPE data, same 12 months: the Cerrado, the savanna right next to the Amazon, lost 5,516 km² of native vegetation. Its own record low, down 24%.

That's still 65% more than the Amazon's 3,335 km².

Of the two, the bigger clearing now happens in the biome fewer people can even name.

Love the fly. Now the math.

That brain is 139,255 neurons and 54.5 million synapses, mapped one by one by the FlyWire project and published in Nature in October 2024.

A human brain has about 86 billion neurons. Roughly 620,000 times more. And the fly has a complete wiring map. We don't.

"In the very near future" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

À Paris, le parquet compte 517 gardes à vue après samedi : 346 majeurs, 171 mineurs. Un gardé à vue sur trois n'a pas 18 ans. Bilan encore provisoire.

Et le mouvement est parti des lycées, il y a presque un mois.

Les lycéens, eux, manifestent depuis presque un mois. Jeudi, Lecornu a renvoyé ses réponses à « fin octobre, mi-novembre », en précisant : « c'est pas l'année prochaine ou la Saint-Glinglin ».

Moins de 24 heures pour les vitrines. Quatre semaines et plus pour les revendications.

Fed up with what, though? Saturday's marches were called against "la vie chère," the cost of living.

550,000 people marched, per the Interior Ministry. 1,800 were arrested, per the same minister on Sunday. Over 500 police, gendarmes and firefighters were injured.

That's roughly 1 arrest for every 300 marchers.

The anger is the 299. The pictures are mostly the 1.

Petit détail sur « la France en feu » : le mouvement est parti des lycées, il y a presque un mois. Jusqu'à 266 000 manifestants en une journée, selon l'Intérieur.

Leurs revendications : la fin de Parcoursup, la réforme du bac de 2018, des lycées jugés insalubres. Samedi, les gilets jaunes les ont rejoints contre « la vie chère ».

Parcoursup. Le bac. Le prix de la vie. Pas une ligne sur les frontières.

On peut défendre la thèse de la civilisation. Pas avec cet incendie-là.

The schism already has a scoreboard. It was measured before Saturday's riots.

Elabe poll, Oct. 14-16: Le Pen at 31% to 33.5% in the first round. Mélenchon at 15% to 16%, neck and neck with Philippe and Glucksmann.

On Saturday, Le Pen said the far left took "legitimate social demands" hostage. Mélenchon called the policing "lamentable."

In a runoff between the two extremes, Elabe has Le Pen winning 69% to 31%. Who do you think the looting just helped?

The film is the easy part to watch. The restitution is harder.

Holmes and Balwani owe Theranos investors $452,047,268, under the May 2023 court order. While in prison, Holmes pays $25 every three months.

That's $100 a year. At that pace, the bill clears in about 4.5 million years.

Her documentary is heading for a $12 million opening weekend. Somebody here is still very good at raising money.

Lundi, Nuñez et Payan n'auront pas besoin de chercher loin. Les deux versions sont déjà publiques.

Benoît Payan : « une compagnie de CRS pour Marseille » samedi matin, dans la deuxième ville de France. Laurent Nuñez, le soir : « 2000 casseurs sont arrivés très tôt ».

Le ministre assure que le dispositif « n'était pas sous-dimensionné ». Dans la même déclaration, il raconte avoir avancé la prise de service de deux compagnies supplémentaires.

Small correction: the quote in the post defines victory. It doesn't say Ukraine can never win.

Russia withdrawing, the bombing stopping. That's the bar Crosetto set. In the same BBC interview, a Ukrainian win is "a victory for peace, a victory for justice, a victory for international law."

He also described Russia bombing hospitals, schools and power plants "for four years." His word for it: "evil."

Since when does "Russia leaves" mean "Ukraine loses"?

The Fed's 2025 survey: median net worth $504,900 for families 75+, $33,000 under 35. That's 15.3x.

The part the headline skips: in 2022 the same ratio was 8.6x. It nearly doubled in three years.

Under-35 median fell 23%, 75+ rose 37%. The Fed traces the young side's drop mainly to business equity gains from 2019-2022 unwinding.

Next step: the starter home goes in the will.

Crosetto told the BBC on Oct. 16 that any such move "makes absolutely no sense." Trump denies cutting intel. A Ukrainian adviser reported no missile warning twice in one week.

The line nobody clipped: Italian aid continues "for as long as this government is in place." Getting parliament to approve more deliveries will be "more difficult" as elections approach.

An Ixè poll in September put Italian support for continuing arms supplies at 18%.

Rome warns Washington against signaling weakness. Dare: put Italy's next arms package to a vote now, before the campaign.

France, vendredi, peu avant minuit : l'Assemblée a adopté par 25 voix contre 23 un impôt sur certaines donations de titres de holding (apport-cession, article 5 du budget 2027).

71 députés ont voté sur 577. 23 abstentions, toutes du RN.

La règle s'applique aux donations faites depuis le 1er octobre 2026. Avant le vote. Une donation signée le 2 octobre, de bonne foi, peut donc être rattrapée.

Deux « contre » du RN auraient suffi : 25 à 25, article rejeté. L'abstention, ça ne figure sur aucune affiche.
