To the Government of Canada / Liberal Party of Canada:
We, the citizens of Canada—the people who pay the taxes, build the communities, and live with the consequences of your decisions—expect you to start prioritizing us.
For the better part of a decade your policies opened the door to unprecedented numbers of temporary residents: international students and temporary foreign workers on a scale this country had never seen. You did so with inadequate tracking of whether those people actually left when their permits expired. You are only now piloting proper exit monitoring after public outrage and Auditor General findings made the gap impossible to ignore. Millions of permits expired or are expiring; you still cannot tell Canadians with certainty how many overstayers remain, or where they are.
You allowed systems that certain organized crime networks exploited—study and work permits used as entry points for recruitment, extortion, and violence. When serious offenders are arrested, some claim asylum and the process slows while citizens continue to fund housing, services, and enforcement. Judges have repeatedly structured sentences to reduce the chance of deportation for non-citizens, creating the appearance (and in documented cases the reality) of two-tier justice. Canadians convicted of the same crimes do not receive the same consideration.
Public safety is not a secondary concern. Domestic synthetic-drug production reached industrial scale. Removal numbers have risen, yet large inventories of people under removal orders, including those linked to criminality, persist. The barn door was left open for years; closing it after the fact while still failing to clear the backlog is not leadership.
Our expectations are straightforward:
• Enforce the rules that already exist. Temporary status is temporary. Overstayers and those who commit serious crimes must be removed as a priority.
• Track exits systematically and publicly report compliance. Stop asking Canadians to accept “we don’t know” as an answer.
• End the practice of lighter sentences for non-citizens designed to avoid immigration consequences. One law for everyone.
• Stop treating Canadian citizens as an afterthought while temporary residents and their claims consume disproportionate attention and resources.
• Align immigration volumes with housing, healthcare, infrastructure, and the capacity of communities that actually live here and pay the bills.
You work for the citizens of Canada. Act like it. Pull up your socks, restore control, enforce the law equally, and put the people who built and sustain this country
