This means that they will not consider how they impact you, how you feel about them, and will not develop or work on themselves in order to improve the relational dynamic between you, even if you're working really hard.
A common misconception about narcissistic people is that they are consciously aware of what they’re doing - but the truth is that they have an incredible lack of self-awareness. Let's talk about that👉:
The psychic structure of someone with severe narcissistic traits is like a house of cards - they are SO fragile inside that they cannot tolerate you having a sense of self.
Getting into your body helps interrupt the neural wiring that's keeping your system stuck in repeating patterns. Time doesn't heal things, especially if you're telling the story over and over again, which can also be retraumatizing.
Trauma is rooted in your IMPLICIT memory- similar to how you remember how to ride a bike. The explicit memory or the story is secondary and can often have gaps and inaccuracies. Get below the story to start to actually heal.
The more you disconnect from yourself, the more complex trauma will be running your life. You need to learn how to safely inhabit yourself and your body before this will change. You need to learn to find a deep safety in yourself.
The problem with this is that it actually disconnects you from your humanity - which is often flawed and messy and difficult. Perfectionism can lead to over-functioning or under-functioning and neither is supportive of mental health.
Take warm baths, Sip some hot tea, use heating pads, wear woolly socks, use a hot water bottle, sit by a fire, eat warm food that's easy to digest, appreciate a warm hug, notice the warmth of the sun on your face, and experience social warmth with others.
As you learn how to access your body through interception, the ability to track and verbalize the sensation running through your body moment by moment, you'll build your body's capacity to heal.
