What I find astonishing about what is happening in South Africa is that the perpetrators of xenophobic and Afrophobic violence against foreign nationals are not only committing these acts, but are actually recording them and deliberately sharing the videos on social media so that they go viral.

One has to ask; why would anyone film themselves committing acts of violence, upload the evidence for the world to see, and apparently believe there will be no consequences?
Even more astonishing is that many of these videos are celebrated and applauded by like-minded individuals, while those responsible often appear to face little or no accountability.

The damage this is doing to South Africa’s international reputation is beyond dispute. Every viral video sends the same message to the rest of the world, that South Africa is violent, xenophobic and Afrophobic.

Whether that perception reflects the views of the majority of South Africans or not, it is the image that is being projected globally because the perpetrators themselves are creating and distributing the evidence.

What is even more troubling is the apparent lack of decisive action. If people openly record themselves committing acts of violence, circulate those videos online and are not swiftly identified, arrested and prosecuted, what message does that send?

It creates the impression that such behaviour is tolerated or carries little risk of punishment by the state.

How, then, can anyone convincingly argue that South Africa is not struggling with xenophobia or Afrophobia when some South Africans are themselves documenting these violent attacks, sharing them with the world and, in many cases, being cheered on for doing so? What kind of mentality willingly damages the reputation of its own country in this way?

A country’s reputation is one of its most valuable national assets. It influences tourism, foreign investment, international partnerships and the confidence of skilled professionals considering whether to live and work there.

Every time one of these videos is uploaded and allowed to circulate without meaningful consequences, that reputation suffers another blow.

The world is watching. And when the perpetrators become the country’s own public relations department, broadcasting violence instead of condemning it, the reputational damage is inevitable and profound.
