Stopping the Boats Needs More Than a Slogan!
Mine is ‘bring back Rwanda’ but let’s look at Reforms.

Farage says he can stop the small boats within a fortnight by deploying the Royal Navy. It is an attractive slogan, which he is a great lover of, but governing is far more complicated than making campaign promises.

The reality is that previous Conservative governments spent years tackling illegal Channel crossings.
They negotiated agreements with France, increased funding for French beach patrols, strengthened intelligence-sharing, targeted organised criminal gangs, signed a returns agreement with Albania, introduced the Illegal Migration Act, established the Border Security Command, and developed the Rwanda deterrent policy.
They also deployed the Royal Navy under Operation Isotrope to support Channel operations.

Yet it became clear.
That is simply putting the Royal Navy in the Channel does not stop the crossings. The Royal Navy is bound by international maritime law to protect life at sea. Its ships cannot simply force vulnerable boats back into French waters without French cooperation and agreement. Good luck with that!
The previous military involvement was largely limited to surveillance, coordination and rescue rather than physically preventing landings.

This is not because governments lacked determination. It is because the problem is international. Smuggling gangs launch boats from France, and lasting solutions require close cooperation with the French authorities, robust returns agreements, faster asylum decisions, effective deportations for those with no right to remain, and relentless action against organised criminal networks.

Conservative governments made progress in some areas. The Albania agreement dramatically reduced Albanian small-boat arrivals, and international cooperation disrupted dozens of organised crime groups. However, legal challenges, the absence of comprehensive returns agreements with the EU, and the complexity of international law meant there was never a quick fix.

Everyone wants secure borders but you should all be wary of anyone claiming they can solve one of Europe’s most complex migration challenges in just two weeks. If it were as simple as sending in the Royal Navy, successive governments - including one that actually deployed the Royal Navy in the Channel - would already have done it.

The British people deserve honest solutions, not impossible deadlines.

If you believe this from Reform then you’re going to be very disappointed.

.@reformparty_uk have announced they'll stop the boats. Again. This time with the @RoyalNavy, and apparently the biggest military operation since World War II. Operation Fortress, they're calling it.

The whole thing is horseshit, and I'll tell you why.

The boats are already intercepted. That's not the problem. The problem is what happens afterwards - where people are processed, and under what law. That's a question of agreements with other countries and domestic legal framework, not a question of how many destroyers you point at the Channel. If we had a returns agreement with France, or if we revived the Rwanda scheme, or if we processed claims offshore, the casework gets done elsewhere. None of this requires an armada. It's policy development, unglamorous and essential, exactly what Reform don't do.

@ZiaYusufUK already promised he'd personally instruct the First Sea Lord to push boats back. That was ages ago. Now they've repackaged the same pledge with added WW2 pomp, which is a pretty grim way to treat actual military history. And even @RobertJenrick, their own Treasury Spokesperson, has said the Navy can't just push boats back - though Reform being Reform, he'll probably be back tomorrow pledging intergalactic amphibian space interceptors instead.

Real solutions exist, they're just boring and difficult. Reform don't do boring and difficult. They do noise, and pledges, and angry voters promised apocalypse-grade military theatre for problems that need caseworkers and treaties. They're very good at campaigns, decent enough at saying what's wrong. Governing? That's different. They remain, as ever, completely unfit for it.
