My New Book Is at Risk — Help Bring Zin in Chaos Into the World

When I first began developing the manuscript for Zin in Chaos, I was encouraged by one particular supporter who had a deep interest in the theological and spiritual dimensions of the political situation we are currently living through.

This person was expected to play an important role in the crowdfunding campaign. But, as extremely bad luck would have it, they became gravely ill just as the project was launched and are now forced to devote their funds to experimental medical treatments.

This means that the project now requires a larger financial contribution from the public than originally anticipated.

The manuscript of Zin in Chaos is already about 95% completed. It would be a great shame if the project were to fail at this stage, after so much work has already gone into it.

De Britse krant The Telegraph schrijft dat pro-Palestijnse organisaties en demonstraties mogelijk worden gefinancierd via een netwerk van buitenlandse donoren en gelieerde organisaties. Dat is een zeer ernstige beschuldiging. Niet omdat politieke opvattingen worden gefinancierd, maar omdat de vraag ontstaat of ogenschijnlijk spontaan maatschappelijk protest in werkelijkheid mede wordt beïnvloed door buitenlandse belangen.

Op dit moment zijn deze beschuldigingen niet bewezen. Tegelijkertijd kan het ontbreken van volledige transparantie zulke zorgen ook niet wegnemen. Juist daarom is onafhankelijk onderzoek noodzakelijk.

Dat sommige organisaties gebruikmaken van complexe juridische constructies met stichtingen en gelieerde organisaties staat vast. Dat is niet verboden, maar het maakt het wel moeilijk om te controleren waar geld vandaan komt en hoe het wordt besteed.

Daarom is de vraag eenvoudig: waarom niet volledige openheid geven over donateurs, buitenlandse financiering en geldstromen?

Wie niets te verbergen heeft, hoeft ook niets te vrezen van transparantie.

Blijken deze beschuldigingen uiteindelijk waar, dan spreken we niet over een administratieve kwestie, maar over een politiek schandaal. Dan is mogelijk sprake van buitenlandse beïnvloeding van het publieke debat, maatschappelijke polarisatie en indirecte beïnvloeding van democratische besluitvorming.

Hoeveel demonstraties zijn dan werkelijk spontaan? Hoeveel maatschappelijke verontwaardiging is authentiek en hoeveel is mogelijk gevoed door verborgen buitenlandse belangen? Dat zijn vragen die iedere democratie serieus moet nemen.

Daarom moeten organisaties die politieke campagnes voeren of massademonstraties organiseren volledige openheid geven over hun financiering. Demonstreren is een grondrecht. Verborgen buitenlandse beïnvloeding is dat niet.

Een sterke democratie vraagt niet alleen om vrijheid, maar ook om transparantie. Wie invloed wil uitoefenen op de samenleving, moet ook bereid zijn openheid te geven over de belangen en het geld achter die invloed.
