There is something that happens at OR Tambo immigration after you come back from an international trip. I see the sign SA passports holders. But it is when you approach the home affairs immigration, they look at your passport after you have greeted in English and the official says: โusaphila MaNdlovu?โ This switch from English to your language. Then they continue to ask: โuhambe kahle?โ you reply. While still checking your passport, they say: โsithembe ubuziphethe kahle nawe!โ They stamp your passport and they say: โwelcome home!โ Your smile, your heart ke sana as you go to fetch your bags. Ikhona maan into eyenzekayo kuwe! Uncuma de uyophuma! Yes, we have problems but OR Tambo immigration officials you make it better! Even for those 3 minutes.
I got my period on the day of my wedding. I shared this with my husband during the wedding ceremony.
After the wedding ceremony, I went directly to his house. Soon, my mother-in-law took me into another room for a small welcome ceremony.
It was around 9 p.m., and I was feeling very uneasy because of my period and the mood swings.
When I came to our room, my husband was not there. After 10 minutes, everybody started asking about his whereabouts.
Nobody knew where he had gone that late, and his phone was switched off.
About 20 minutes later, he came back. When everyone asked where he had been, he said one of his friends was leaving and he had gone to say goodbye.
When he came into our room, he handed me a pack of sanitary pads and said, "You may need this. Happy period!"
That was the only thing I could remember about my wedding.
When I moved to CPT in 2021, the girl who lived next door at res was a Xhosa girl who had no idea who Tsonga people are. I remember she asked if we had a beach in Giyani and whether Giyani was in S.A.
She had a masters in sociology.
