These wee ones were published today. Essays are attempts at asking new questions, I think. Like how do I, where I am, most usefully talk about a heatwave? How does this thing, traded, sit within new visions? How do I change the very system that allowed me to write it? 1/3
In May 2021, an anonymous letter in The Bookseller warned that transphobia was a problem in the publishing industry. 3 years later, a culture of silence and fear has prevented much further public comment.
So I wrote about it. And I named names.

The fact that a senior civil servant who specialised in assessing arms exports to Israel has ended his 18-year career because he thinks the Foreign Office "may be complicit in war crimes", and not a single national outlet has reported it, is frightening. We have a captive media.

“The description of us [as anonymous activists] was deliberate; designed to delegitimise our stake in the industry – and our right to seek to change it.”

Our Baillie Gifford boycotts aren’t about tearing down the arts – they’re about building them up.
Sustainable, ethical sources of funding are not an outlandish ask – and possibilities are already emerging.

Huge, groundbreaking court decision in the UK.
Oil and gas projects can no longer get away with counting only a fraction of their real emissions. https://t.co/leXH5yYZbU
.@Edinburgh_CC are banning advertising of #fossilfuels, SUVs and airlines, and have given their backing to the #FossilFuelTreaty (a global exit plan from coal, oil and gas) 🥳
Would be great to see more councils across #Scotland and the UK do the same

I *despair* of this discourse, a framing set by festivals themselves.
People @fossilfreebooks depend on a thriving literary sector to survive artistically & financially- our colleagues/friends/writers.
We ALL want book festivals to thrive, to grow in dynamic & nourishing ways.🧵
Continuing to see so many people airing public opinions about FFB and what we've done or haven't done which are misinformed at best.
Many of you know us as colleagues and part of your communities. I've said this since last year: if you're wondering, why not ask.
