This new Venezuela oil deal stinks.

Trump says it won’t cost us anything and will lower gas prices. The reality is rebuilding Venezuela’s oil infrastructure could take up to $100 billion. Increasing production will take years. None of this will bring down gas prices any time soon.

It’s also the wrong grade to simply pour into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

The Pentagon is taking a 35% ownership stake in the new company. The White House claims it won’t cost taxpayers? Then let’s put that promise into law.

I introduced legislation to stop U.S. tax dollars going to rebuild Venezuela’s oil infrastructure. Let’s pass it.

Also, our “partner” in the deal faces serious allegations.

Alejandro Betancourt has been investigated for money laundering in Switzerland, Spain and the United States, all tracing back to corruption at Venezuela’s state oil company. Switzerland froze his assets and issued an arrest warrant, and he was arrested in London in late 2025 pending extradition. That’s who we’re getting into business with.

If this deal is really such a great investment, private investors can take the risk. American taxpayers shouldn’t.
