Corrections, volume 2 (part 1/5):
Directing animation means directing drawings! ✏️

I like capturing physicality in animation drawings, even when the setting is fantastical. A proper arrangement of bones, muscle, the behavior of light and shadow upon solid forms — these things help the human viewer involve themselves in the living performance.

After all, we quickly understand so much about the world around us with just our eyes! Two mere light sensors set in our heads can map out the size and depth of the Grand Canyon, as well as the shape of dew drops on a blade of grass.

These are some drawings that I’ve made to guide our animators.

The pilot episode of Knights of Guinevere is made up of over 350 shots, about three quarters of which contain some kind of 2D character drawing. With 9 animators creating rough animation and tie-downs, things can quickly add up to many different ways to interpret the style of drawing these characters. 👯

Part of my job as an Animation Director is to use my own drawings to bring together the works of all these different artists — such that they not only fit well when placed right next to each other in the finished episode, as well as that they provide enough info for our Clean-Up & Color teams and Compositors…but also that they look real cool, too! ✨

Teaching is part of the job: it had me feeling like a professor, to tap into knowledge of anatomy and composition that I had gained through my own studies and then divvy it out through these draw-overs, notes, and layouts. 👨🏾‍🏫
