Prior to digital animation, the backgrounds in anime were often hand-painted watercolour illustrations. As the celluloid sheets were transparent, this allowed the animators to layer the foreground, moving objects or characters, on top of the background to create a full image.

New competition - new theme!

This year’s theme is BRIDGE, an important motif in Japanese arts and culture. How are you planning to incorporate the theme in your entry?

The next two posters were made to celebrate the film's theatrical release in 1989. The last poster was made 8 years after the original release and was used as a promotional item for the VHS release of Kiki's Delivery Service which came out on November 21st 1997.

With the 36th anniversary of Kiki's Delivery Service having passed in July, we are delighted to share an original cel-ga and a selection of lesser-known posters from the beloved Studio Ghibli film.

This particular cel-ga captures Kiki in flight, with her loyal companion Jiji perched behind her, mid-delivery on one of her early jobs. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in 1989, Kiki’s Delivery Service is celebrated for its gentle coming-of-age story.
