Today is the feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, the great Augustinian saint and patron of the souls in purgatory.

When Robert Prevost made his perpetual vows as an Augustinian in 1981, he chose St. Nicholas as his patron. How striking, then, that Leo XIV—an Augustinian—would later say of Francis: “I strongly felt the spiritual presence of Pope Francis accompanying us from heaven.”

St. Nicholas reminds us, however, of the importance of praying for the dead rather than presuming they are already in heaven. To canonize the departed in our own minds can mean withholding the very prayers, Masses, and sacrifices they may still need.
