On 25 September 2015, before the American press and the rest of the world, President Xi Jinping assured everyone that China’s construction activities in the Spratlys did not target or affect any country, and that China had no intention to pursue militarization.
Eleven years later, the record answers for him. Military-grade runways on Mischief Reef, Subi Reef, and Fiery Cross. Hangars built for fighter aircraft. Radar and sensor arrays. Missile emplacements. Naval and coast guard vessels operating out of those very features — including Mischief Reef, which sits inside our own exclusive economic zone and which the 2016 Arbitral Award confirmed can generate no maritime entitlement of its own.
That was not a policy that quietly evolved. That was a commitment made in the open, in the garden of the White House, and then ABANDONED!
So every time the Chinese Embassy in Manila accuses the Philippines of lying, of “hyping,” of fabricating what our people see and document at sea, I wonder how they reconcile that with their own leader’s words in this video.
WHO IS LYING NOW?
In the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House this September, I only hope he will no longer lie — not to the American media, not to President @realDonaldTrump, and not to the rest of us who have to live with the consequences in the West Philippine Sea.
