Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Capt. William Ruto today met a delegation from Turkey’s fast-growing shipping line, Akkon Lines, to explore possible areas of collaboration as the carrier positions itself for a larger role in East Africa’s maritime trade.

The Turkish delegation, led by Managing Partner Hakan Cevik, is in the country as part of a regional tour assessing opportunities along the East African coast.

Akkon Lines, established in Istanbul and rapidly expanding its regional services, operates container liner routes across Turkey, the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East, with growing interest in Indian Ocean ports.

Turkey remains one of Kenya’s major export destinations, importing tea, tropical fruits and a wide range of horticultural produce.

Capt. Ruto said the Port of Mombasa has invested heavily in key infrastructure projects to promote seamless trade flows and support new entrants seeking reliable gateway access.

Akkon Lines provides liner services, regular container connections, land transportation and warehouse logistics, and is positioning itself as a competitive alternative for shippers linking East Africa with Turkish and Mediterranean markets.

Both sides discussed potential cooperation in cargo handling, schedule integration and market development as Mombasa continues to attract new shipping lines tapping into rising regional demand.
