He kept saying how close some families are to losing everything over one bad month.

The next day he went back and told her he wasn’t filing anything. Instead, he gave her a little extra time and told her to focus on getting back on her feet.

She looked completely shocked.

A few days later, the rent was paid. That was years ago.

Since then, she’s never missed another payment. Not once.

Every holiday season she drops off a card thanking him for giving her a chance when things were falling apart.

My husband still believes in rules.

But he also believes that sometimes the difference between someone failing and someone recovering is a little patience at exactly the right moment.

My husband owns a few rental properties, and over the years he’s become pretty strict about one thing: rent is due when it’s due.

A few years ago, one of his tenants suddenly missed a payment.

There was no call. No text. No explanation.

By the end of the week, he was ready to start the usual process. But instead of handling it through paperwork, he decided to stop by the apartment first.

When the tenant opened the door, he immediately noticed how exhausted she looked. 2 young kids were sitting on the couch behind her, and before he could even say anything, she started apologizing.

She explained that she’d recently started a new job after being laid off. Her first paycheck was coming in a few days, but she’d fallen behind trying to keep up with childcare, bills, and everything else life had thrown at her.

Then she started crying. The kind that happens when someone has been holding everything together for too long.
