The secret prisons established by the now-dissolved Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Aden were not merely places of detention; they turned into human slaughterhouses that swallowed dozens of victims through torture, medical neglect, and extrajudicial liquidation.
A former detainee recounts painful details about Imad Ahmad al-Abadi, nicknamed "Al-Sinjab" (The Squirrel). A young man from the Al-Tawahi district, Imad was known among his fellow detainees for his kind heart and frail physical build—yet none of this earned him any mercy from his tormentors.
According to the testimony obtained, Imad was subjected to brutal forms of torture inside the prison located at Shallal Shaye’s house in Gold Mohur ("Sea View") in October 2016. He was suspended for long hours by iron handcuffs from the cell ceiling, his feet unable to touch the ground. He was severely beaten with wooden sticks and iron chains, breaking several of his ribs, while the handcuffs left deep wounds on his hands until they became nearly paralyzed.
He was also subjected to severe physical and psychological torture, including waterboarding. They would place a wet cloth over his face after binding his hands and feet, laying him flat on his back on the ground. They would then run a water tap continuously over his face until he was on the verge of suffocating. His agonizing screams could be heard throughout the night by other detainees who were powerless to help him. All of this torture was carried out under the direct supervision of Yusran al-Maqtari and executed by the jailer Awadh al-Wahsh.
After being transferred to the Waddah Hall prison in November 2016, Imad contracted cholera, and his health deteriorated rapidly. Despite pleas from fellow detainees for the jailers to provide medical treatment, he received no medical care whatsoever. Instead—according to the testimony—he was severely beaten while already in critical condition.
After days of suffering, Imad "Al-Sinjab" passed away inside the prison due to the fractures inflicted upon his body and his deteriorating health. His name was added to the long list of victims whose lives ended behind bars, far away from their families.
His body was never handed over to his family, and his mother never got the chance to say goodbye or weep over his grave. His name remains a testament to one of the tragedies that swallowed the sons of Aden inside these secret prisons.
