So God raised up Judges to save Israel from their oppressors.

“And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.”

God gave laws such as keep these words in your mouth and in your heart. To teach these to your children so they know the laws to keep.

Not only that but also caused their neighbors gods to entice Israel as a test to see if they would continue to worship God or turn away. Israel turned away. With Joshua dead God tried to get Judah the tribe to lead Israel, Judah failed.

Would the other tribes have been successful too if Judah had also lead them?

“The Lord said, ‘Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.’”

Joshua has just died and the people of Israel are looking for their next leader. However, Joshua did not appoint anyone like Moses had done him. So the people inquired of God.

Maybe because Judah did not help with those territories. Maybe because they did not help Judah clear their territory. What this does show is Israel needs a leader. Judah as a tribe was asked to be that leader. Was Judah too concerned with just claiming their land?

The people of Israel just needed to follow God’s law. Only worship God! Only obey God!

“And Joshua said to all the people, ‘Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.’"

Jesus used the cross as the arc of the new covenant. The stone of the empty tomb as the rock of witness. Jesus said the Passover bread is the communion with his body. The wine Jesus blood. These things remind me that there is nothing I can do to earn salvation.

That worship will stop the worship of God. God will remove Israel for worshipping false gods. Joshua wanted Israel to succeed. Israel has a problem called the human condition. Israel is the perfect example of fail ask for forgiveness fail again.

Joshua is reaching the end of his life. Joshua is giving advice to the leaders of Israel. He is warning Israel if they associate with those left in the land it will lead to a falling away.

If Israel falls away God will do to them what God did to those Israel took the land from. Joshua’s solution was to Love the Lord. So long as the people continue to love God they will be less likely to associate with those who worship false gods.

Who said they built it so that the children on each side of the river would keep the peace and believe in the same God.

“You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.”

The tribes of Ruben, Gad, and half of Manasseh are still with the rest of the tribes.

As soon as these men returned across the Jordan they built an altar. This was received poorly and the tribes these men had been defending now wanted to fight these good servants.
