🏀 We're back! Here's my way-too-early field -- no games yet but it was good to put a bracket together again. Happy college basketball season everyone! 🏀
@Bauertology Great stuff! Also a personal best for me, would’ve matched you if I hadn’t flipped NC State & Missouri last-minute lol 😂 agreed on the committee, hope they keep up this general line of thinking for future tournaments
Now, with the dust settled from Selection Sunday, it's time for one of my favorite post-reveal traditions: How They Built the Bracket!
What I'll be doing in this thread is going through the process of how the selection committee built the bracket and its respective matchups, based on the overall seed list, regional and subregional locations, and numerous bracketing principles to abide by.
I always find this reverse-engineering process to be a lot of fun, as well as an informative way to show people how the bracketing process works. So, without further ado, let's get to it!
Here is the selection committee's 1-68 ranking of all the teams in the field, which will be driving how the bracketing shakes out.
Happy Selection Sunday! Tough decisions at the cut line, but in the end Indiana & Xavier are my last 2 teams in — they should both hope VCU & Memphis win today…
Final update before 6!

Wins over Vandy & A&M put Texas in my field today, but lose and they’ll likely fall out for good. UNC & Boise both won yesterday, but they prob need to win today to get in. UC Irvine, Colorado St & Dayton are the only others with a bubble chance (Wake will likely get passed)
Congrats to SIUE, Omaha, Lipscomb, High Point, and Drake for clinching bids this weekend! Auburn stays overall #1 despite back to back losses. Despite big resume flaws, Ohio St (14 Ls) & Xavier (only 1 Q1 W) are in the field — because the teams below them have even bigger flaws…
As @JmorrB pointed out, Minnesota has 7 Quad 1 wins.
No team has ever missed the field with 7 Quad 1 wins. The Gophers are looking for their 8th tonight. They could potentially shatter the record for most Quad 1 wins to miss the field.
First bracketology of March! A lot of tough seeding choices — at the top, Tennessee narrowly takes the last #1 over Alabama & Florida. The bubble is difficult too: Boise State is in by a hair over Nebraska & Xavier (Xavier & UNC each need a second Q1 win to make it in for now)
It’s officially top 16 reveal day! Here’s my prediction — it’ll be interesting to see if the committee has taken results from the last couple days into account (based on prior years, my guess is no)
Despite losing Sat, Auburn stays the overall #1 in this update, followed by Bama, Tenn & Duke. UNC is the last team in, ahead of Arkansas.
Shouts to UCSD — likely need to win out until the BW title for any at-large shot, but amazing to even be in the mix in eligibility year 1!
First in-season bracketology post! They’re 4th out from my field, but Drake has one of the most interesting bubble cases to me — leaving them out for now because of relatively poor metrics.

PSA to check out @Bauertology’s site! Not only is he a great bracketologist, his Resources page is a must-use for anyone putting a bracket together: https://t.co/48riKGpkH1
WE’RE BACK.
Happy start of the men’s college basketball season to all who celebrate! Here’s my preseason bracket — pretty much uneducated guesses with no results yet, but always fun to have a starting point and dust off my knowledge of the bracketing rules. Have fun everyone! 🏀
