@MavwreckTweet@randywheeler35@AP_Trevor At the school where I teach there is a very heavy self selection bias... The students who choose BC tend to be the strongest and most confident. They come in stronger than our AB students. (On average. There are certainly very strong students in AB as well.)
@alittlepepper73@bookitprogram Even if you had signed up, you might not be able to do the program. My email has "not been activated or been blocked," with no explanation and no response after I contacted them. Super frustrating. I had my kids hyped about getting free pizzas for reading just to end up blocked.
@Mathowitz @coachpaulgrady I see. I think it has benefits, sure. If he's doing multiplication then talking about squares (and other types if special numbers) feels like something fun to know.
@Mathowitz @coachpaulgrady And I guess this they would be able to answer because they already know 4^2 and 5^2 by memory? If they understand the idea of perfect square numbers, the skill of testing ones they don't yet know feels worth practicing to me. 🤷♀️
@Mathowitz @coachpaulgrady I also teach HS but have young kids. Guess and check can feel unsatisfying, but isa valid method. Opportunity to talk about how to organize a guess and check. If you know 6×6 is too small by a lot, try something a lot bigger. You don't have to test every single number, etc.
@Darren16C @Mathowitz The idea of using prime factorization is a really good one, I think. Elementary academic team contests have questions about gcfs and lcms and prime factorization helps with those too. This is not outside the realm of usefulness or ability for a 2nd grader who enjoys math.

@KarenKilgariff: behold, my mother's day gift. Lest you ask why, a story: several weeks ago my husband bid in a silent auction at the front of our local Walmart (I mean already, wtf) on a framed photo of Tom Brady. I did not know about this, but he did it because my 10 year (1/n)
(In case anyone becomes concerned, I want to clarify that my husband purchased rights to print this photo before ordering it. He literally custom ordered that plaque and learned to cut mats himself to frame the whole thing so it would match the Tom Brady. 🤣)
on a framed photo of Karen Kilgariff, you'd be asking me questions, too!" (Note: I picked your name because I knew he would barely know who it was and definitely not be interested bc true crime is not his thing.)
I guess he was listening. 🤷♀️
