They come in stronger than our AB students. (On average. There are certainly very strong students in AB as well.)

@Mathowitz @coachpaulgrady I see. I think it has benefits, sure. If he's doing multiplication then talking about squares (and other types if special numbers) feels like something fun to know.

@Mathowitz @coachpaulgrady And I guess this they would be able to answer because they already know 4^2 and 5^2 by memory? If they understand the idea of perfect square numbers, the skill of testing ones they don't yet know feels worth practicing to me. 🤷‍♀️

@Mathowitz @coachpaulgrady I also teach HS but have young kids. Guess and check can feel unsatisfying, but isa valid method. Opportunity to talk about how to organize a guess and check. If you know 6×6 is too small by a lot, try something a lot bigger. You don't have to test every single number, etc.

@Darren16C @Mathowitz The idea of using prime factorization is a really good one, I think. Elementary academic team contests have questions about gcfs and lcms and prime factorization helps with those too. This is not outside the realm of usefulness or ability for a 2nd grader who enjoys math.
