NICRAT takes awareness campaign, screening to FCT communities💃💃.

The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has launched cancer awareness sensitization campaigns and screening services in rural communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The campaign which began on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in three Area Councils of the FCT was put together by NICRAT’ department of Cancer Prevention and Control in partnership with America Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

The awareness campaign took place concurrently in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji Community and Bwari Area Council, in the first phase. Other Council Areas will follow on March 26, 2026.

Speaking at the AMAC campaign which took place at Gwagwa PHC, the Director General of NICRAT, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, said: “Cancer is no longer a disease that affects only people in distant countries. It is here in our communities. Many of us may know someone - a friend, neighbor, colleague, or family member who has suffered from cancer.”

Represented by the Coordinator, National Cancer Health Fund (NCHF), Dr Arisegi Sarafadeen, the NICRAT DG, however, said: “The good news is this: many cancers can be prevented and successfully treated if detected early.”

He, therefore, encouraged, community and religious leaders, youth groups, and women associations to help spread cancer awareness and ensure that their members go for regular screening at designated centres, support those undergoing treatment, promote healthy lifestyle and visit the health facility to report any abnormal feeling for prompt investigation.

“Across the Area Councils in the FCT, this outreach brings services closer to the people where awareness is raised, risks are identified early, and individuals are connected into appropriate care pathways. It represents the practical translation of policy into impact,” Prof. Malami stressed.
