Joachim "Jochen" Sigismund Albrecht Klaus Arwed Detlef Peiper
born January 30, 1915, in Berlin-Wilmersdorf;
murdered July 13, 1976, in Traves, France
was a German Waffen-SS officer - ultimately holding the rank of SS-Standartenführer - and a Knight's Cross recipient with the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" during World War II; he is also regarded as a victim of political injustice during the Malmedy trial.
Peiper is considered "the last fallen soldier of the Leibstandarte."
Leibstandarte
At the age of 18, he enlisted as a volunteer in the SS on October 16, 1933, and - alongside Herbert Kuhlmann and others - completed an officer training course at the SS Officer School in Braunschweig from April 24, 1935, to March 30, 1936. Upon graduating from the school, he became an SS-Untersturmführer. An excerpt from his evaluation, reproduced here, reveals a great deal about the SS officer Peiper:
“Very good in the field and in the classroom. Very good aptitude and performance. Very industrious and possesses good judgment.
Tough on himself and others. A born soldier. Displays complete maturity despite his youth. Possesses a sense of responsibility. A comrade ready for action; of good character.
Suitable for leadership.”
After Braunschweig, he joined the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler.
In June 1938, he was appointed adjutant to Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. He remained Himmler's adjutant until the start of the Russian campaign in the summer of 1941. He became commander of the 11th Company of the LAH, a unit he had previously led during the campaigns in the West and the Balkans.
WWII
In 1942, he became commander of the III Battalion of SS Panzergrenadier Regiment 2 "LSSAH"; his adjutant was Knight's Cross recipient Werner Wolff. On March 19, 1943, he captured Belgorod. Following the Allied invasion of Sicily, he was deployed to Northern Italy in August 1943; September saw the implementation of "Case Axis" (Fall Achse), followed by anti-partisan operations. In December 1943 (after the death of Georg Schönberger), he assumed command of SS Panzer Regiment 1 "LSSAH". Returning to the Eastern Front, he fought at Zhytomyr and, alongside the 1st Army, broke through the encirclement at Kamianets-Podilskyi.
Following the Allied invasion in June 1944, he took part in the fierce and costly fighting in the Falaise Pocket. From October 1944, he fought along the Westwall (Siegfried Line).
During Operation "Wacht am Rhein", also known as the Ardennes Offensive or the Rundstedt Offensive, which began on December 16, 1944, he led SS Panzer Regiment 1 (Kampfgruppe "Peiper") of the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler." This unit operated as part of the I SS Panzer Corps "Leibstandarte" within the 6th SS Panzer Army, under the command of Sepp Dietrich.
Peiper’s dynamic advance carried his force as far as La Gleize, near Stavelot; there, however, he was cut off and encircled by enemy troops. Nevertheless, he and his men managed to break out in the freezing cold, making their way back to friendly lines on foot after abandoning their heavy equipment.
Following the conclusion of the Ardennes Offensive, he fought against the Bolsheviks once more during the Lake Balaton Offensive. His comrade and friend, SS-Obersturmführer Werner Wolff, was killed in action.
On March 30, 1945, Peiper’s Panzer group crossed the Reich border near Ödenburg. It assembled in the area east of Wiener Neustadt to confront the Soviet offensive.
Following the fall of Vienna and St. Pölten, Peiper’s battle group continued to fight in the Alpine foothills; after the death of Adolf Hitler, the Leibstandarte withdrew westward from this area. Peiper addressed his men one last time and designated the town of Steyr as the rally point. On May 8, 1945, after crossing a bridge over the Enns River and ensuring the safety of the bulk of his troops, Peiper dismissed his soldiers and set out for home in Rottach to join his family.
