🚨BREAKING: Israel has closed all crossings into Gaza and halted the entry of humanitarian aid following Iran’s retaliatory strikes on Israel, cutting off supplies to roughly 2 million Palestinians in the territory.

We promised Reham we would come back, this time with a wheelchair suitable for her specific needs - cerebral palsy, zero mobility.

But Reham's family lives in the last house before the occupation's "yellow-line" buffer zone in. During The Sameer Project’s previous visit, bullets were flying through the area as we delivered food and medication. This time, for safety, Reham's mother met our team at another location to receive the wheelchair.

Imagine what this family faces every time Reham needs treatment. Imagine carrying a child with severe mobility challenges from one of the most dangerous areas in Gaza so her wounds can be cleaned and dressed. Imagine the fear that accompanies every journey.

On May 25, we returned with the wheelchair we had promised her -
a specialized chair with a headrest and safety straps. At the time of purchase, this wheelchair cost around $500 and was the last one available from a bulk order. Today, basic wheelchairs cost closer to $800 if they are avaiable.

Along with the wheelchair, Reham received ulcer treatment and medications through one of our medical points, and transportation support was provided so her mother could safely return home for just $50 with commission.

For most children, a wheelchair represents mobility. For Reham, it represents the ability to get the treatment she needs in place where even reaching medical care can be life-threatening.

🔴 The son of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza held in Israeli detention since December 2024, warned Monday that his father’s life is in danger after being transferred to solitary confinement in Nafha Prison — a move the family says came in direct retaliation for filing a legal appeal with the Israeli Supreme Court.

The family says Abu Safiya is being held in a two-meter cell with no food, water, medicine, or access to his lawyer.

“How can a person be punished for asking why he is being detained?” his son asked in an urgent public appeal. “Every hour that passes without action may bring more suffering and pain.”

You want to know what imperial conditioning looks like from the inside?

It looks like a person who knows that the United States has the largest prison population in the history of human civilization, and still describes other countries as "unfree."

It looks like a person who knows their healthcare system allows people to die from rationed insulin, and still describes other countries' economics as "failed."

It looks like a person who watched their government spend $2.3 trillion over twenty years building a state in Afghanistan that collapsed in just 10 days, and still trusts that same government's assessment of which other countries are "stable" or "democratic" or "ready for self-governance."

It is not stupidity.

It is something more structurally interesting than stupidity.

It is what happens when the story a person needs to believe about themselves is in direct conflict with the evidence their own eyes can see, and the story wins.

Not because the evidence is unclear.

But because the cost of following the evidence to its conclusion is too high.

Better a comfortable contradiction than an uncomfortable clarity.

The empire is built on that choice, made daily, by millions of people.
