Britney Spears at the 2007 VMAs will forever be one of the saddest examples of how CRUEL the media machine could be. Probably one of the most disgusting displays of misogyny in pop culture history. She was living through absolute hell that year — relentless paparazzi harassment, a public mental health crisis, postpartum depression, grieving her aunt’s passing, and a brutal custody battle over her babies — and Sarah Silverman and MTV’s brilliant idea was to turn her pain into a punchline and humiliate her for entertainment.
They didn’t see a young woman struggling. They saw engagement, money and entertainment. They saw a target. And the world laughed.
Looking back, it’s honestly disgusting how normalized that cruelty towards Britney was. The whole thing aged like fucking MILK. She deserved compassion, not humiliation. 💔 Imagine going through all of this and still delivering an iconic performance. 👑 #JusticeForBritney #YoureUgly
This moment was so rare that even Britney Spears said "this feels illegal" they really kept my mother hostage omg😭 thank you Britney for giving us this performance!
