Today I had the honour of meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) at the GMA house, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The meeting was part of my ongoing process of consultation with key stakeholders and identifiable groups in the country.
The president of the GMA, Professor (Dr.) Ernest Yorke and his colleagues offered many insights into the challenges faced by medical doctors in Ghana, including health workforce retention, remuneration, inequitable distribution of medical doctors, infrastructure, emergency preparedness, conditions of service, deprived area allowance, the role of the private sector, the requirement of the Medical and Dental Council for doctors to write licensing exams, etc.
Following our discussions, I am convinced that a paradigm shift is needed in our health care policies. Some brilliant ideas were put on the table, and I am very encouraged that when implemented they will be transformational for the welfare of doctors and the health sector as a whole.
Healthcare delivery is a collaborative mission. I extend my sincere gratitude to the President, the executive leadership, and members of the GMA for their invaluable insights, candor, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of the Ghanaian people.
Together, we will continue to build a robust, resilient, and patient-centered healthcare system that leaves no community behind.
Today, I met with the leadership of the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG), a private sector organization of all the seed value chain actors, to discuss issues affecting the seed industry and various ways to address these issues to ensure food security and food sovereignty in Ghana.
It was instructive to note for example, that Ghana imports 90% of the vegetable seeds we use. We also discussed the unfortunate situation of the large-scale import of food that has resulted in the inability of local farmers to sell their produce such as maize, rice, and soybeans even at lower prices.
There are also the issues of regulatory gaps in our National Seed Policy, “political seed merchants” in Ghana’s procurement of seed and infrastructure challenges amongst others.
It was a very engaging discussion and many solutions were proposed by NASTAG. I would like to thank the leadership for their time and look forward to our respective teams continuing this engagement.
Yesterday, I met with the national leadership of the Junior Doctors Association (JDA), the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association (FGMSA), and Medical Students Association Presidents from across the country.
We had an open and honest conversation addressing the critical challenges facing our young medical professionals and students, from training conditions and timely postings to overall welfare and career progression.
These are the brilliant minds who will carry the weight of Ghana’s healthcare system tomorrow, and their voices must shape our policies today.
@Blue_Footy Alonso is ruthless. How many managers will put Colwill on the bench when it’s obvious he’s not in good form but amongst the most experienced in the squad
