Our special guest for this week’s draw is none other than Hubert Rigney, one of Offaly’s most decorated hurlers. Hailing from St. Rynagh’s, Hubert enjoyed huge success at club level, winning three senior county titles in 1990, 1992 and 1993, before capturing a Leinster Club title in 1993. His inter-county journey began in the late 1980s when he starred for the Offaly minors, winning both Leinster and All-Ireland honours in 1989. He followed this up with two Leinster U-21 titles in 1991 and 1993.
By 1990, Hubert was already part of the Offaly senior panel, helping the county to its first Division 1 National Hurling League crown. In 1994, he enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning a Leinster title and famously lifting the All-Ireland after Offaly overturned a five-point deficit in the dying minutes to beat Limerick. His performances that year earned him a richly deserved All-Star award.
Rigney’s reputation as one of the game’s finest defenders grew further in 1995 when Offaly defeated Kilkenny in what is often hailed as one of the greatest Leinster finals ever played. Although setbacks followed, including defeat to Kilkenny in 1998, Hubert and Offaly bounced back in spectacular fashion. That season produced the famous All-Ireland semi-final trilogy against Clare, which included the notorious “blown-up early” replay. Offaly ultimately prevailed and went on to defeat Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final where Offaly went on to win by 6 points. Hubert proudly walked up the Hogan Stand steps and lifted the Liam McCarthy Cup.
A true servant to Offaly hurling, Hubert Rigney’s legacy is etched in both Faithful County and GAA history and we look forward to have a chat with him on Thursday evening.
The 2 lucky Dip Winners will receive a pair of tickets each for any club championship game of your choice over the coming weekend.
