@aaron_renn It is difficult to find a pertussis-only vaccination. (I don’t know if they exist) pertussis vaccinations are always tied up with other vaccines like the TDAP (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus). We likely would use a pertussis vaccine if it was standalone.
"I used to be Catholic" is such a common thing to hear in Protestant or Evangelical convert testimonies that it usually passes unremarked.
Papists may say that the Catholicism of these converts was not real Catholicism. I would agree.
But I would add that almost no converts out of Protestantism and Evangelicalism into Romanism knew what real Protestantism was.
In either direction, the search is usually for substance. It is expressed as a desire for history or tradition, but it is a longing for the weight of glory. This is right. God's Church on earth should be glorious.
To be Protestant is to be Reformed Catholic. It is to love not only the Scriptures, but Augustine, Boethius, and Anselm. Yes, often even Benedict, Aquinas, Erasmus, and Dante.
To be Protestant is to call for the church Catholic to return to its catholicity. The Romans can start by surrendering the primacy of Rome.
What do I mean by this?
I mean that America is and always has been a Protestant nation and that Catholics, in assimilating to America, have assimilated to Protestantism, both politically and culturally.
They have moderated their allegiance to the pope (Vance didn't kiss the ring), looking to him for "spiritual" guidance, but not political dominion.
They have softened on some of their theological distinctives (not one of the Roman Catholic speakers suggested that Charlie Kirk is in purgatory; instead, he's seeing his Savior face to face; that's Protestantism).
They have essentially accepted their status as one of the major denominations within (American) Christendom, which is a Protestant conception of the church (much like C.S. Lewis gives the Catholics a room in the Mere Christianity house; they may have a room, but it's a Protestant house).
Yes, I still believe that they have substantial errors in their theology (as Charlie Kirk did--from transubstantiation to biblical authority to the Eucharist). And I will never tire of thanking God for the doctrine of justification by faith alone (Trust in Christ alone and you will be saved, whether Presbyterian, Baptist, or papist).
But they have adapted to our Protestant ways, and I, for one, am grateful.
In sum, America is a Protestant tree, and the Catholics have nested in our branches for so long that they've begun to grow some leaves.
I was deeply distraught by the assassination of Charlie Kirk yesterday. I, like many, felt a deep rage seeing one of our own taken down by demonic forces for simply speaking with people. Yesterday, many of us learned to truly hate what is evil.
The Psalter has answers for clinging to what is good so today I wrote and recorded the following setting of Psalm 120 arranged from the NKJV. It is written for Charlie Kirk, a true gentleman, who dedicated his life to speaking truth in the pursuit of peace. Charlie was truly a peacemaker but the enemies risen up against us only want war.
At the end of the song I take a small snippet from Gregory Wilbur’s setting of Psalm 68 - “Let God Arise.”
Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.
Rest in peace Charlie Kirk, son of God.
Psalm 120
1 In my distress I cried to the LORD,
And He heard me.
2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips
And from a deceitful tongue.
3 What shall be given to you,
Or what shall be done to you,
You false tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the warrior,
With coals of the broom tree!
5 Woe is me, that I dwell in Meshech,
That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul has dwelt too long
With one who hates peace.
7 I am for peace;
But when I speak, they are for war.
