From the very beginning, I have not believed that the world is unfair. We usually get what we deserve. This next phrase is too painful to write, but there is an evident truth to it: since the majority of Filipinos tolerate mediocrity and corruption, that is precisely why we are where we are. It always takes two to tango, however inappropriate this idiom may be.

But this incident struck me the most.

Blaming the people or the media for not recognizing your power, accomplishments, and significance is something deeply twisted. They simply don’t see you the way you see yourself. In trying to demand recognition, you only end up highlighting your own irrelevance.

It was painfully cringeworthy to watch.

What kind of painful childhood does one have to go through to blame others for one’s own inadequacies? 😢

May kaakibat bang Konsensiya o pagtitika ang mga nagpasimuno? Nasa bibliya ba ang mga ritual na ito? Kasama ba sa mga bilin ng Diyos na gawin ang mga re-enactment na ito para mapatunayan ang ating pananampalataya sa Kanya at para mabawasan ang ating pagkakasala o sarili lamang nating KAPRITSO ang ating sinusunod? Hindi lang ito tungkol sa isang aso.
Ito ay tungkol sa isang komunidad na piniling tumahimik, sa isang opisyal ng gobyerno na inabuso ang kapangyarihan, at sa isang nilalang na walang laban na pinaslang sa harap ng kasiyahan.

Si Axle ay hindi ingay sa paligid, hindi aksidente, at hindi dapat naglaho nang parang walang nakakita. Ang kanyang buhay ay hindi dapat itinapon at tinabunan lang ng kawalang paki alam o kasiyahan.

This growing—what I want to call—“blurt-out culture” shows how far we’ve drifted into unfocused thinking, where impulse replaces intention and constant noise drowns out what truly matters.

And there’s a trap in all of this: a kind of modern voyeurism, where showing our most vulnerable, lame, or even vulgar selves is glorified as “authenticity.” It creates the illusion that rawness, impulsiveness, and unfiltered emotion are the truest expressions of human nature. Meanwhile, the dignified, sympathetic, rational, and reflective side of being human—the side that chooses restraint, kindness, and values—is dismissed as “fake” or “hypocrisy,” instead of being recognized for what it truly is: a conscious choice for the common good.

In this chaos, marketing machines and political strategists thrive. They know that a distracted, confused, and insecure public is the easiest to influence. Social platforms become their laboratories for manipulation, testing grounds for narratives, and marketplaces for carefully crafted PR personas. Along the way, our core human values—discernment, responsibility, empathy—are pushed aside. What gets amplified instead are irresponsibility, ignorance, and apathy, wrapped in entertainment or outrage, boosted by algorithms, and normalized as everyday behavior.

Come to think of it, the core in us that deliberates, weighs things, and decides what to value—that is the human in us, not the version of ourselves we happen to blurt out. The truest self is not the impulse we broadcast, but the self who chooses and decides.

When you say ‘no more pain’ to a loved one, you also wish it meant that you wouldn’t be left to carry the pain of missing them once they are permanently gone. I never imagined reaching a stage—an age—where you can literally feel how fleeting life is. And then you realize how precious every moment is with the subjects of your affection—far more important than wasting time trying to impress anyone in whatever field you are devoted to.

During the pandemic, fifteen loved ones and important people passed away, including three from my own family. After the pandemic, many people I know—friends, classmates—suddenly passed away, or their health turned seriously ill. Even close loved ones changed so drastically, as if life had drained their vigor, or as if they felt life was no longer worth living at all. It feels like a dream or a nightmare, yet it is painfully real.

And so you pray—just to calm your spirit and accept life’s realities in a way that still allows you to see why life remains worthy. Because there is no other choice but to find new meaning in every unexpected chapter this life brings. God, teach me how to let go—a letting go that means loving even more, not letting the love fade or be forgotten.
