[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Ryan, you’re confusing flashes of ability with sustained success. Those aren’t remotely the same thing.

Yes, we’ve seen Malik Willis make impressive plays. We’ve also seen him look effective for stretches, particularly in Green Bay. But a handful of good quarters or isolated performances doesn’t establish that someone can consistently succeed as a starting NFL quarterback.

That’s precisely what Miami is paying him $67.5 million to prove.

And I don’t disagree that Miami needs better receivers and tight ends. I’ve acknowledged that repeatedly. But listing the shortcomings of every skill-position player doesn’t magically establish that Willis is performing well.

You’re essentially arguing that because the receivers aren’t good enough, we can’t meaningfully evaluate the quarterback. That’s an awfully convenient standard.

When Willis makes a spectacular play, it’s proof of his talent. When he struggles, it’s apparently proof that everyone around him is terrible.

That’s not objective evaluation. That’s a conclusion you’ve decided on in advance.

The reality is that Willis has never demonstrated sustained success over a full NFL season as a starter. His limited success in Green Bay deserves recognition, but it doesn’t erase what we’re seeing in Miami.

And if we’re going to judge him by his best moments, shouldn’t we also acknowledge his worst ones?

A few impressive quarters demonstrate potential. Consistent execution over entire games and seasons demonstrates whether you’re a legitimate franchise quarterback.

Five years into his NFL career, we’re still debating whether Willis can consistently execute the basics.

Miami didn’t pay $67.5 million for occasional highlights. They paid for a starting quarterback.

Potential isn’t production, Ryan. And flashes aren’t sustained success.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Ryan,

You’re confusing acknowledging a weakness at wide receiver with conceding that the quarterback bears no responsibility for his own performance. Those are two entirely different arguments.

I never claimed Miami has a legitimate WR1 or WR2. I acknowledged the receiving corps needs improvement. What I challenged was the assumption that this automatically excuses Willis’s performance.

And those weren’t “receiving stats.” Completion percentage, touchdown-to-interception ratio, and passer rating are quarterback passing statistics. They’re influenced by the supporting cast, absolutely, but they also reflect quarterback accuracy, decision-making, timing, and execution.

Receivers struggling to separate can explain some incompletions. Running incorrect routes can explain some miscommunications. Neither establishes that every inaccurate throw, poor read, or interception is someone else’s responsibility.

More importantly, you haven’t demonstrated that the receivers caused those mistakes. You’ve simply assumed they did.

That’s the fundamental flaw in your argument. You’re demanding evidence that Miami’s receivers are good enough while apparently requiring no evidence that Willis is good enough.

Both can be problems simultaneously.

Willis is a fifth-year NFL quarterback being paid to lead this offense, not a rookie who should be exempt from evaluation until every position around him is upgraded.

Acknowledging that the receivers aren’t good enough doesn’t prove the quarterback is.

That’s not a contradiction in my argument. It’s a distinction you’re failing to make.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

The idea that Dolphins fans lack patience is absolutely laughable.

Some of us have been patient since 1984. That’s 42 years without a Super Bowl appearance. Forty-two years of new coaches, new general managers, new quarterbacks, new philosophies, and the same familiar promise: Just give us another year or two.

At what point does patience become an excuse for accepting organizational failure?

Dolphins fans aren’t necessarily opposed to a rebuild. We’re exhausted by the endless cycle of being told that success is always just around the corner, only to watch another plan fall apart before it ever produces meaningful results.

And let’s stop pretending the NFL operates on some guaranteed three- or five-year rebuilding schedule. One significant injury, one disastrous draft class, one bad quarterback evaluation, or one poor personnel decision can derail years of planning. There is no guarantee that sacrificing 2026 produces a contender in 2027, 2028, or ever.

You say we’re only five games into the season. That’s true. But fans aren’t evaluating just five games. They’re evaluating decades of disappointment, questionable decisions, wasted opportunities, and promises that never materialized.

And when a new regime makes a $67.5 million commitment to an unproven starting quarterback, fans have every right to question whether this is actually the beginning of something better or simply another expensive mistake.

Patience isn’t the issue. Credibility is.

You cannot repeatedly ask a fanbase to trust the process when previous processes have delivered so little.

So if listening to frustrated Dolphins fans for the next 13 weeks sounds torturous, imagine investing 42 years of loyalty, money, time, and emotion into a franchise that keeps asking you to wait until next year.

Dolphins fans have demonstrated extraordinary patience. What this organization hasn’t demonstrated is that our patience will ever be rewarded.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Omar, this is exactly what’s wrong with the Malik Willis narrative.

We’re celebrating the spectacular throws that supposedly only 15% of NFL quarterbacks can make while admitting he struggles to consistently execute the SIMPLE ones?

That’s not a minor flaw. That’s a fundamental problem for an NFL starting quarterback.

He’s 27, in his fifth NFL season, and Miami committed $67.5 million to him. At what point do we stop treating him like a developmental rookie?

And now he needs a better offensive line AND better weapons? From what I’ve watched, the line has generally held up reasonably well. It’s not perfect, but it’s hardly responsible for every poor decision, inaccurate throw, or turnover.

Against Cincinnati, Willis threw for 137 yards, had two interceptions, lost a fumble, and posted a 51.0 passer rating.

But somehow the solution is always to upgrade everyone AROUND him rather than question whether HE is the right quarterback.

Tennessee moved on. Green Bay used him successfully in a limited role. Miami paid him to be a franchise starter.

Making an occasional spectacular play doesn’t make you elite. Consistently making the routine plays is what makes you a legitimate NFL starter.

And here’s the uncomfortable reality: Miami’s new coach and GM have invested so much in Willis that benching him this early would raise serious questions about their judgment.

So are we evaluating performance, or protecting a $67.5 million decision?

You don’t build an entire roster to compensate for a quarterback’s inability to consistently execute the basics. You find a quarterback who can.

Potential gets you drafted. Flashes get you noticed. Consistency wins football games.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Coach, with all due respect, you helped select the quarterback responsible for delivering that consistency.

Malik Willis is in his fifth NFL season. Tennessee moved on, Green Bay used him successfully in a backup role, and Miami decided that was enough evidence to justify a $67.5 million investment.

Now, five games and zero wins later, we’re being told the passing game needs consistency?

That’s exactly what fans questioned when Willis was signed.

And I’m tired of hearing that everything around him is the problem. From what I’ve watched, the offensive line has generally done its job. The protection hasn’t been perfect, but it certainly hasn’t been the disaster some would have us believe.

Receivers can struggle to separate, but that doesn’t excuse poor decisions, missed opportunities, inaccurate throws, or unnecessary turnovers.

Against Cincinnati, Willis threw for 137 yards, committed three turnovers, and finished with a 51.0 passer rating.

At some point, the quarterback has to be part of the solution instead of continually being portrayed as the victim of circumstances.

And here’s the uncomfortable question: Will this coaching staff honestly evaluate Willis, or will they continue playing him because benching a $67.5 million investment this early would expose a potentially disastrous personnel decision?

Dolphins fans deserve better than another season of excuses.

Coach, identifying inconsistency isn’t leadership. Correcting it is. And accountability starts with the people who chose the quarterback.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

“That was unfortunate.” No, Malik. That was an interception.

Scramble drills can be chaotic, but the QB is ultimately responsible for deciding whether to make the throw. If Washington’s defender was in the passing lane, why force the ball to Coleman?

Two interceptions, a lost fumble, 137 passing yards, and a 51.0 passer rating against Cincinnati. At some point, these aren’t just unfortunate circumstances. They’re legitimate concerns about decision-making and execution.

But here’s the bigger problem Dolphins fans face.

Miami’s new head coach and GM have backed themselves into a corner.

They committed $67.5 million to a fifth-year quarterback who had never established himself as a consistent NFL starter. Benching him just five games into their tenure would raise serious questions about their evaluation, judgment, and decision to make him the centerpiece of their offense.

So how likely are they to admit this early that they may have made a costly mistake?

That’s the uncomfortable reality. Willis may have a longer leash because of what the organization invested in him rather than what he’s producing on the field.

And that’s where Dolphins fans get stuck.

We can recognize the deficiencies at receiver, acknowledge the offensive line’s struggles, and still question whether Willis is capable of leading this team.

But if the people responsible for signing him are also the people deciding when to move on, there’s an obvious incentive to keep giving him opportunities.

The most expensive mistake isn’t necessarily signing the wrong quarterback. It’s refusing to acknowledge the mistake because admitting it would make leadership look bad.

Dolphins fans have seen enough organizational mismanagement. We shouldn’t have to endure another lost season just to protect the reputations of a new coach and GM.

Accountability shouldn’t stop at the quarterback. It should extend to the people who decided he was worth $67.5 million.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

“We have to figure out a way to get guys on the same page.”

Malik, after today’s performance against Cincinnati, perhaps that starts with looking in the mirror.

15-of-27 passing. 137 yards. 2 INTs. A lost fumble. A 51.0 passer rating.

And let’s not forget taking a completely avoidable sack with the ball inside the Bengals’ 1-yard line, turning a golden touchdown opportunity into a field goal.

Yes, Miami has inexperienced receivers. Yes, the offensive line has issues. But neither explains away those costly quarterback mistakes.

The Dolphins didn’t lose simply because everyone wasn’t “on the same page.” They lost a game in which their starting quarterback committed three turnovers and failed to capitalize on critical opportunities.

And this isn’t an isolated performance. Miami is now 0-5.

At some point, the conversation has to shift from what Willis needs around him to what Willis needs to improve himself.

Leadership isn’t just identifying problems with the offense. It’s taking responsibility for the mistakes you personally contributed to those problems.

Miami invested $67.5 million in a starting quarterback, not another season of excuses.

Getting everyone on the same page starts with the guy holding the football.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

@NealDriscoll It’s all tomfoolery!

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Dave, we get it. Miami’s receivers aren’t very good. Nobody is disputing that.

But at what point does Malik Willis become responsible for Malik Willis’s performance?

He’s a fifth-year NFL quarterback being paid $67.5 million, not an undrafted rookie thrown into an impossible situation.

Poor receivers can explain dropped passes and limited separation. They don’t automatically explain inaccurate throws, late decisions, missed reads, or an inability to sustain drives.

And isn’t elevating the players around you part of what separates a legitimate NFL starter from a career backup?

Tennessee moved on. Green Bay used him effectively in a limited role. Miami paid him to be something more.

If every poor performance is the receivers’ fault and every good play proves Willis is elite, then we’re not evaluating a quarterback. We’re protecting a narrative.

At some point, the excuses have to stop and the production has to start.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

You just said Willis “doesn’t have flaws,” then admitted “he hasn’t been good,” and somehow concluded he’s going to be elite next year. 😂

That’s not analysis. That’s blind optimism.

Willis is 27, in his fifth NFL season, and has already been evaluated by multiple coaching staffs. Tennessee traded him for a 7th-round pick. Green Bay developed him into a productive backup. Miami gambled $67.5 million that he could become a legitimate starter.

And now we’re supposed to ignore a 73.0 passer rating, one passing TD, two INTs, and an 0-4 record because his supporting cast isn’t ideal?

Of course the receivers and offensive line matter. Nobody disputes that. But those circumstances don’t magically erase concerns about accuracy, anticipation, processing, and consistency.

And “he hasn’t looked like a train wreck” is a pretty remarkable standard for someone being paid starting-QB money.

I’m not rooting against Willis. I’d LOVE for him to become elite. But there’s a difference between supporting your quarterback and refusing to objectively evaluate him.

You keep telling us what Malik WILL become. I’m evaluating what he’s actually demonstrated.

Hope is not evidence. Potential is not production. And being better than a disaster doesn’t make someone a franchise quarterback.

If he becomes elite, I’ll gladly celebrate. Until then, the burden of proof is on the $67.5 million investment, not the fans asking legitimate questions.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

I actually agree with Willis on this one. Engaging with fans on social media is a no-win situation, especially when emotions are running high.

But there’s an important distinction between ignoring personal attacks and dismissing legitimate criticism.

Dolphins fans aren’t wrong for questioning the performance of a fifth-year QB who received a $67.5 million contract despite never establishing himself as a consistent NFL starter.

Nobody should expect Willis to defend himself on X. His response should come on Sundays.

And that’s ultimately what matters. Not his social media presence, personality, or ability to ignore criticism.

The Dolphins didn’t pay $67.5 million for Willis to win arguments on social media. They paid him to win football games.

So far, the questions about that investment are entirely justified.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Nobody is claiming that patting the football automatically makes Malik Willis a bad QB. But dismissing legitimate mechanical concerns as “propaganda” is ridiculous.

A QB patting the ball before throwing can become a problem when it turns into a predictable habit that delays his release and gives defenders an extra split second to react.

Does every QB do it occasionally? Absolutely. Does that make it irrelevant? No.

Willis is in his fifth NFL season, not his fifth NFL game. His footwork, processing, anticipation, release timing, and ability to read defenses are all fair subjects for evaluation.

And here’s the bigger issue: Why does every criticism of Willis get treated like a personal attack?

He’s being paid to be an NFL starting quarterback. Scrutinizing his mechanics and performance comes with that responsibility.

Potential deserves opportunity. Performance deserves evaluation. And criticism isn’t propaganda just because it challenges the narrative you want to believe.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

I have no doubt Malik Willis works hard, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the game. But when an organization commits $67.5 million to you as its starting quarterback, expectations go well beyond effort and having fun.

“Whatever comes with it comes with it” might sound like a relaxed mindset, but Dolphins fans have heard enough about potential, development, and patience.

This is your fifth NFL season. You’re no longer an inexperienced rookie trying to earn an opportunity. You’re being paid to lead an NFL offense and produce results.

Nobody expects perfection, but fans have every right to expect accountability, urgency, and improvement.

Hard work is the minimum expectation. Winning is the objective. And at $67.5 million, results, not intentions, are what ultimately matter.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Saying Tyreek “made it all work” completely ignores how football actually works.

Tyreek was elite before Miami. Nobody disputes that. But his best statistical season came with Tua throwing him the football and McDaniel designing an offense built around motion, timing, anticipation, and creating separation.

In 2023, Tua led the NFL in passing yards (4,624), Hill led in receiving yards (1,799), and Miami led the league in total offense.

You honestly believe that was ALL Tyreek?

McDaniel’s scheme created opportunities. Tua’s anticipation and accuracy exploited them. Hill’s speed made defenses pay.

All three benefited from one another.

And when defenses adjusted to Miami’s motion concepts, the offense became far less effective. That alone should tell you the success was more complicated than one receiver carrying everyone.

Here’s the bigger question: If Tyreek was solely responsible for making everything work, why couldn’t his presence alone prevent the offensive decline?

Tyreek was an elite weapon, not the entire offense. Giving him all the credit while dismissing everyone else isn’t analysis. It’s revisionist history.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

I think this oversimplifies what happened with Tyreek and Tua.

Did Tyreek elevate Tua? Absolutely. Elite receivers make quarterbacks better.

But the reverse was also true, and there was a THIRD factor: Mike McDaniel’s scheme.

Miami’s early offensive explosion wasn’t simply “Tyreek made Tua good.” McDaniel built one of the NFL’s most motion-heavy offenses around Tua’s anticipation and quick release and Tyreek’s extraordinary speed.

Miami used shift/motion on roughly 78% of its plays in 2022 and an NFL-record 80% in 2023. The “cheat motion” became particularly devastating because it gave Hill a running start and free release while allowing Tua to throw with anticipation before the defense could recover.

The results were ridiculous.

In 2023:

Tua: 4,624 yards — led NFL
Hill: 1,799 receiving yards — led NFL
Miami: 401.3 yards/game — led NFL

Then defenses adjusted to what Miami was doing and officials became increasingly attentive to receivers gaining illegal forward momentum before the snap.

And what happened?

The offense stopped looking nearly as unstoppable.

That’s important when arguing that adding another elite WR automatically “elevates” Willis or some future QB the way Hill supposedly elevated Tua.

Maybe he does. But you’re assuming the receiver created the success rather than recognizing that the QB, receiver AND scheme created advantages for each other.

Tyreek benefited enormously from Tua’s anticipation and accuracy.

Tua benefited enormously from Tyreek’s speed and separation.

And BOTH benefited from McDaniel creating schematic advantages that defenses eventually became much better at countering.

That’s why I wouldn’t look at 2022-23 and conclude, “Just give Malik Willis an elite receiver and we’ll recreate it.”

Football doesn’t work that way.

If anything, what happened afterward should make Miami MORE concerned about determining whether it has the right quarterback.

An elite WR can elevate a QB.

But if your QB needs an elite WR and a schematic advantage to become productive, the WR hasn’t solved your quarterback problem, he’s helped hide it.

So yes, Miami can draft Smith and still draft a quarterback in 2027 or 2028.

The real question is whether passing on a potential franchise QB NOW is worth betting that another one will conveniently be available when Miami finally decides it’s ready to take one.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

@OmarKelly We can thank NIL for that one.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

Before everyone says, “It’s too early to judge Malik Willis,” or “Look what he did in Green Bay,” or “He has rookie/subpar receivers,” let’s acknowledge all of it.

Yes, Willis played well in limited opportunities in Green Bay. Yes, Miami’s receiving situation may not be ideal. And yes, four games alone shouldn’t define a quarterback’s entire career.

But we aren’t evaluating a 22-year old rookie.

Willis is 27 and in his fifth NFL season. Tennessee drafted him, developed him, gave him opportunities and eventually traded him for a 7th-round pick. Green Bay developed him further and got excellent production from him in limited duty but his role remained backup/spot starter behind Jordan Love.

Miami was the team willing to make the leap and pay $67.5 million based largely on the belief that those flashes would translate into full-time starting production.

So far:

• 56.3% completions
• 712 passing yards
• 1 TD / 2 INT
• 73.0 passer rating
• 0-4

Now we’re told the receivers are the problem.

That’s certainly PART of the equation. Young receivers make mistakes. They run imperfect routes, drop passes and don’t always create separation. A QB shouldn’t be blamed for everything around him.

But here’s the problem with using that as a blanket defense:

Starting quarterbacks are paid to elevate the players around them.

If Willis needs veteran receivers consistently getting open, excellent protection and favorable play-calling before we can fairly evaluate him, then what exactly did Miami pay $67.5 million for?

Great quarterbacks make young receivers better. Capable starters overcome deficiencies around them. They aren’t expected to perform miracles, but they ARE expected to be part of the solution.

And that is ultimately my argument.

I’m not saying Malik Willis has no talent. He clearly does.

I’m not saying Miami’s roster problems are all his fault. They’re not.

I’m saying Miami paid starting-QB money for a player whose NFL résumé primarily demonstrated that he could be a very good backup and spot starter.

Green Bay proved he deserved an opportunity. Miami paid him as though he’d already proven he could handle the job.

Maybe Willis proves Miami right.

But “give him more time,” “look at Green Bay,” and “his receivers aren’t good enough” can’t become excuses that make him impossible to evaluate.

At some point, a $67.5 million quarterback has to elevate the offense, not wait for the offense to elevate him.

Potential earned him the opportunity. Production has to justify the investment.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

What did I expect? I didn’t believe Tua was the long-term answer either. But moving on from Tua only makes sense if you actually improve the position.

Cutting him, eating the financial consequences, and then overpaying a quarterback who had been a backup just to get the same—or worse—results isn’t progress.

The argument isn’t that Miami should’ve kept Tua forever. The argument is that if you’re going to make an expensive change at QB, the change better make you better.

So far, they paid a premium price for a lateral move.

I expected an upgrade, not a more expensive version of the same problem.

[Fed up Kenny Powers @JohnHicks88566]

So Malik Willis is basically a $70 MILLION QB now. 😂

Miami cut Tua, is still paying him a truckload of money, brought in Willis…and somehow bought the same offensive problems and the same lack of wins.

Only the Dolphins could spend $70M changing quarterbacks without actually changing the results.

Different name on the jersey.
Same problems.
Bigger bill.

That’s not an upgrade. That’s an expensive rebrand. 🐬
