How do resource constraints impact innovation?

In a new working paper with @JustineBoudou, we tackle this this question from a unique angle, studying the impact of supercomputing constraints on the rate and direction of science. 1/N

@JustineBoudou We interpret these findings as being consistent with the relaxing of constraints driving the study of less "conventionally incentivized" projects, allowing researchers to pursue projects with higher uncertainty. 4/N

@JustineBoudou We find that receiving more computing power leads to:
(1) An increase in the number of papers produced
(2) Exploration of less-studied, newer topics
(3) An increase in the breadth of the research produced 3/N
