The Southampton Cenotaph was unveiled #OnThisDay in 1920.

Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, his Whitehall Cenotaph was unveiled in London five days later, on 11 November 1920.

An iconic symbol of remembrance, the names of 3,298 Southampton men and women are now listed here.

Time for a break, waiting for what happens next

The Battle of Trafalgar happened #OnThisDay in 1805.

And #OnThisDay in 1905, Southampton’s Trafalgar Dry Dock was opened.

It was the largest dry dock in the world at the time and it was later enlarged. Last used for ship repairs in the 1980s; since then it has been filled in.

Some of the women had major, not incidental roles, within organisations such as SOE, MI5, MI6 and MI9 (amongst others).
