The Odyssey, like the Iliad, the Aeneid, Beowulf, the Icelandic sagas, Niebelungenlied, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and other such epics can stand by themselves. They belong to a different era and any modern adaptation will be untrue to their spirit.

The very fact that someone aims to do a modern and subversive take on them suggests that they find their philosophy lacking. The very woke package of the movie’s marketing suggests that they believe that the meaning of these epics are not “progressive-regime-approved”.

This level of disrespect to the original material is symptomatic of a culture that hates the past, criticises without understanding, and aims to deflate morality by presenting everything as amoral or morally grey.

These are the effects of the philosophical deflationism of a crucial part of modern philosophy; the one emanating from Hume’s empiricism and Kant’s critical philosophy.

One of the many reasons why people love revisiting these epics, is precisely because they are not modern in that sense.
