The modern generation appear to exist on standby until they need to interact, switching instantaneously between live interaction and standby in a very creepy way.

Especially the younger generation. I assume from their manner and behaviour that they only understand simple social cues.

For instance, there is a young lady, about 22 years old currently buying coffee.

She walked in almost drone like. She had a totally blank expression. Arms down to the side. Avoiding eye contact.

She waits behind about her couple of people. When her time comes she remains with a benign expression until the moment someone interacts with her.

Suddenly, she bursts in to colour. Her expressions become vibrant and highly emotive, almost like there’s no in between. She becomes human. She goes from head down drone, fearing human interaction, straight into synthetic high emotion.

The moment she’s not interacting again. She appears to power down completely. Almost like an iRobot character on standby.

She stands there. Totally motionless. For five minutes. Not a single expression crosses her face. She is totally ignoring her surroundings until her coffee is ready. At the moment someone interacts with her, she very temporarily becomes a cartoon version of herself. And then she slips straight back into drone mode.

Some people will read this and automatically see only the context they know. They will assume that the girl somehow knew that an observer was judging her, but leave that notion behind. She had no idea I was even present.

Rather, this girl is a victim of the modern Panopticon which, in her mind, is constantly observing and judging her. She has been brought up in a system where she believes that she needs to behave herself in social situations sans nuance. In fact, her ability to read social cues is so basic that she doesn’t seem to want to risk interacting outside what is required of her.

She has been made introverted from intense social conditioning. My generation had nothing close to this level of conditioning, and yet many of us were successfully conditioned regardless.

I know humans are funny creatures, and some of us are a little more extrovert than others naturally. However, what I’m pointing to is something I see repeated throughout modern society. A real fear of interaction. Lonely people stuck inside a contrived mental box.

I have also talked to people who explain there mental health issues to me. Many of the symptoms that come with irrational social anxiety express in the same way as the young lady in the cafe. Suffering from anxiety forces people to avoid all unnecessary interactions.

I contend that our current society is designed to promote and foster severe anxiety. The youth are trained to become emotionless drones who defer all responsibility and accountability to the perpetual Milgram experiment which has been designed to trap us.

When the modern generation are not needed, they exist on standby.
