“Florida Republican state Rep. Fabian Basabe has been found liable for sexually harassing two former male staffers, in a case that also resulted in findings of battery and defamation.

The civil case was brought by former legislative aide Nicolas Frevola and former intern Jacob Cutbirth. According to court reporting, the men accused Basabe of inappropriate touching, invasive questions about their sex lives, showing them an image of a naked man, and other conduct while they worked in his office. A Leon County jury ultimately awarded the plaintiffs $450,000 in damages.

The case drew particular attention because of Basabe’s political record. In 2023, Basabe voted for HB 1069, an expansion of Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law, widely known by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law. The measure extended restrictions on classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity through eighth grade and also imposed new restrictions involving pronouns in schools.

Basabe had previously described himself as supportive of gay marriage, and in 2024 he even filed legislation seeking to remove Florida’s statutory ban on recognizing same-sex marriages. That bill did not advance.

He denied the harassment allegations and represented himself during the civil trial. After the verdict, Basabe said representing himself had been a mistake and indicated he was considering his next steps.

The jury’s verdict also revived scrutiny of a 2024 pledge Basabe made to voters, when he said he would resign if the allegations against him were ever proven true. As of the reporting following the verdict, he had not resigned.

Meet MAGAt Charles Barton "Bart" Lucas, a 59-year-old registered Republican from Fruitland Park, Florida, who faces a total of 26 counts of video voyeurism, including seven counts involving minor victims under the age of 16. Lucas served as a volunteer overseer and youth pastor at Heritage Community Church since 2008 and was the longtime Vice President of Sales at RoMac Building Supply.

On June 19, 2026, Lucas was initially arrested on five counts after his employer's IT director discovered hidden-camera files on his password-protected work laptop and Google Drive. Law enforcement revealed that Lucas secretly placed multiple hidden cameras inside a church restroom and baptismal changing areas to record adult women and adolescent girls undressing. Investigators even identified Lucas after his own voice was caught on tape while he was adjusting and setting up a recording device.

While he initially pleaded not guilty to the original five charges and bonded out, Lucas was re-arrested during a scheduled court hearing on August 4, 2026. Detectives uncovered 69 total videos on his Google Drive, allowing them to identify 21 additional victims. According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, some of the recovered footage dates back decades to the early 2000s, and the investigation remains open to find more victims.
