If you envy someone getting a meagre sum to live on with a disability because they can't work, do you also envy their disability?

Do you envy all the difficulties that come with it? Most of which you probably can't even imagine.

Do you envy the endless Dr/Consultant/therapy appointments? Disabled people can have worse outcomes for medical care and often receive limited therapies or care.

Do you envy knowing that you would live with that debilitating condition & all it's difficulties for the rest of your life?

Do you envy the pain? For chronic pain, pain relief is considered a success if it takes away 10% of the pain, so pain is often constant & severe, there is no relief from it.

Do you envy the awful side effects from medication or treatments? Being on long term medication requires tests which can be blood tests or more invasive ones, some tests as often as every 3 months. Some medications have side effects that require further medications to manage the side effects. It's not a case of saying just don't take them, these could be life saving medications.

Or is it that you envy the small amount of money they get to survive because they're getting something you can't? Because the #media and #MPs have told you that they're worthless, a burden & don't deserve support?

Right now, someone on PIP is reading your timeline. They've seen eleven posts in three weeks calling their support "morally wrong." "Unaffordable." "Unfair." A "lifestyle choice."

They didn't choose their condition. They didn't choose to need help. They filled in a 42-page form describing the worst moments of their life.

They attended an assessment where a stranger asked them to prove they can't function. They waited months for a decision. They were told yes, you qualify, you ARE that unwell.

And now the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary the person who wants to run the department that assessed them posts every single day that their existence on the system is "morally wrong."

How does that feel? To the person with depression who already believes they're a burden. To the person with anxiety who already believes they don't deserve help.

To the person who already thought about ending it and decided to ask for support instead.

Your words have weight, Helen. You're not a random account with 40 followers. You're the Shadow Secretary of State.

When YOU say PIP is "morally wrong," the person reading it doesn't hear "the system needs reform." They hear "YOU are the problem. YOU are the cost. YOU are what's wrong."

Eleven times. In three weeks. Every day another post telling vulnerable people they're a burden on the country.

If one person reading your timeline today decides they're too ashamed to claim what they're entitled to that's on you.

If one person decides the stigma is too much and stops asking for help that's on you.

If one person in crisis sees "morally wrong" and believes it about themselves that's on you.

Words from the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary aren't tweets. They're signals. To 4 million PIP claimants.

That the person who wants to control their support thinks their existence in the system is morally wrong.

Please stop. Reform the system if you want. Publish a policy if you have one. But stop telling vulnerable people, every single day, that needing help is a moral failing.

It isn't policy. It's cruelty with a blue tick.

According to GMB on the news this morning, employers are continuing to reject requests for reasonable adjustments from disabled workers.

So, anyone bitching about disabled people not being in work, or complaining that too many disabled people claim disability benefits or PIP, can kindly shut up.

Disability discrimination has always been easy for employers to hide. You can attend an interview with all the necessary qualifications and experience, but if an employer quietly decides that your disability might make you more difficult or expensive to employ, how exactly are you supposed to prove that was the real reason someone else got the job?

If you do get the job, requests for adjustments can be refused, ignored or dragged out for months. Some employers seem more willing to risk a tribunal claim than provide the support that would allow a disabled employee to remain in work.

Feeling let down or ignored in that position is not “playing the victim card”. It is recognising that employers, government and the systems supposedly responsible for enforcing disabled people’s rights are failing to address one of the very things driving people out of employment and increasing their need for financial support.

PIP is not an unemployment benefit, either. Disabled people can receive it while working because it is intended to help with the additional difficulties and costs caused by disability.

You cannot demand that disabled people work while tolerating workplaces that exclude them, refuse the adjustments they need and push them back out again. You certainly cannot then blame those same people for needing support.

In 1997, the people of Scotland voted by 74% to restore our Parliament.
That wasn’t a policy preference it was a constitutional act of popular sovereignty.

Yet over the past two decades Westminster has steadily rewritten the rules, removing around three quarters of the practical autonomy Scotland voted for.

Brexit legislation, the collapse of the Sewel Convention,
the Section 35 veto
and the Internal Market Act
now allow Westminster to override or nullify Scottish laws at will.

A Parliament created by referendum has been hollowed out by legislation it did not consent to.

In constitutional terms, that means the will of the Scottish people has been eroded, while Scotland’s democratic legitimacy continues to grow.
Westminster’s legitimacy, by contrast, diminishes every time it blocks the mandate Scotland has repeatedly renewed.
