Something is going seriously wrong in Canada with forest management and wildfire containment.

According to federal government data, the peak year for wildfires was 1989, with over 12k wildfires burning 7.5 million hectares of land.

The peak year for area burned was 2023, with over 6.8k forest fires burning a staggering 17.6 million hectares.

Before 2023, the area burned never exceeded the number of fires on this graph, dating back to at least 1970. That has now happened twice in the last three recorded years.

The number of wildfires across Canada has not surpassed the 1989 peak, but the damage to communities, wildlife and health is so much worse.
