As @Jacqui_Smith1 said during her speech: AI and data are reshaping what work looks like. We must equip the workforce to make the most of the opportunities presented by them.
Huge thanks to Katrina, Lily and Serena for sharing their stories yesterday!
#NAW2026
From productivity and patient care, all the way to Parliament.
Yesterday we brought three brilliant learners to the #NationalApprenticeshipWeek fair in Portcullis House, hosted by the @ApprenticeAPPG and its Chair @tobyperkinsmp.
Our apprentices spoke to MPs and employers about the AI projects they're working on in their roles - from reducing on the day theatre cancellations and improving cardiac rehab uptake in the NHS, to helping a sustainability SME grow through efficient automation.

Stop relying on the school system for a future-proof team.
Start investing in the talent that’s already there.
Unlock potential across all ages, accelerate your growth, and close the skills gap.

Alan Johnson just dropped the essential question in the FT: “Why is it that when work now continues well beyond 60, training basically stops at 30?” 🎯
The answer is costing your business its competitive edge. https://t.co/whjUOHcUls

We’re systematically starving the workforce of the skills needed to solve the productivity problem.
With four in five of the 2035 workforce already on today's payroll, we can’t afford to let training be seen as a "disposable luxury".

@LearnWorkUK This is an economic own-goal.
By 2035, 2.5 million more high-skill jobs will be created. We need talent to fill them.
Our CEO Euan Blair: "With AI reinventing what work looks like, we have...a real opportunity to unlock latent potential and reskill people into growth areas."
"Training isn't a luxury. It's fundamental." - Alan Johnson, former Education Secretary, in a new @LearnWorkUK report.
📈In-work training boosts pay 15% (to £3,400/mo), but wage growth can "evaporate" by 40 without it.

It's not just about pay. It's about job mobility.
The report finds too many workers are stuck in a "doom loop" of low pay > no training > low pay.
A key reason? UK firms spend half the EU average on training.

Things we know:
- Upskilling the workforce in data and AI.
Things we don’t know:
- How to do a brilliant job hosting a comedy quiz show.
- How to build a digital ID system.
Many thanks for the speedy correction.
Meanwhile, if you see a clip of me saying the ID card contract has gone to Tony Blair’s son: it hasn’t. That was something I was given to ask about last night, but turns out to be incorrect. Which is bad news for the fact checkers but good news for social mobility.
Our message at this year's @UKLabour conference was clear and urgent: TRAIN YOUR WORKERS.
As AI changes how we work, this is no longer just a recommendation. It's an economic necessity. 1/5
The key takeaway? AI skills are crucial for every age, role, and industry.
Without skilled people, we can never unlock AI’s full potential as a country. 4/5
