Found across many Indigenous cultures, cradleboards are a connection to ancestors and traditional parenting practices, writes @JoleneBanning.

two years this family has had to wait for their loved one to be searched for.. in a landfill. Hey Canada, do you think this would fly if the woman was any other race besides Indigenous??
This is Donna Barlett, grandmother to the late Marcedes Myran. Beautiful Marcedes of Long Plain First Nation was murdered by Jeremy Skibicki in Winnipeg in 2022 and her body dumped in the Prairie Green Landfill.
As a child Marcedes delighted in playing tricks on her grandma such as hiding her shoes when her grandma was going out somewhere.
Marcedes birthday was Saturday, November 9, on the day I met with Donna. Marcedes would’ve been 29. She has two young children being raised by Donna.
On December 1, 2022 Donna remembers police detectives, victim support services and a missing persons unit representative caming to her home in Winnipeg.
“That was the worst day of our lives. It changed us all,” Donna said, breaking down in tears.
“Brandi (Marcedes sister) was screaming and falling down. I remember sitting on the couch crying and Brandi couldn’t breathe…time stood still.”
Donna asked the detectives where Marcedes was. They told her the horrifying details.
“They said they weren’t gonna dig the landfill because they had enough evidence to convict him. We were just like, why?”
Two years later the search for Marcedes and Morgan Harris, another victim of this detestable crime, will begin on December 2. The search is being led by the Manitoba government and the families of the murdered Indigenous women.
“Now that it’s getting closer I’m scared,” Donna said, trembling. “Because it’s been surreal. If they find a piece of her it’s going to make it real. And that’s going to hurt. It might break me…”

Ms. Murray notes behind her on the stage, there are some of the 260 cradle boards on display at the gathering from
Thunder Bay. They date back to 1860 and they represent hope and life and serve to remind us why we are here, for the children, she says.
Anyone denying residential school atrocities & demanding to see children’s bodies at school sites a) is deflecting from the issue; b) doesn’t understand science; and c) is macabre.
A little research of reputable work, human empathy, and active listening goes a long way.
hey @robertbenzie wondering if you can spare a minute or two to give a quote about @TanyaTalaga She credits her confidence from her time spent at Queens Park with you as bureau chief
"Once again we see an indigenous community's issues dismissed, and their story buried. We see the vilification of links made between solidarity movements on Turtle Island and Palestine."
This has to stop. It’s time to strip police of their high degree of impunity. They need to be held personally responsible as well as their institutions and unions. No more free ride, no more leave with pay for years, pay for your own lawyer, buy insurance so families are compensated for what should be considered crimes. Enough.
New Democrat MP Leah Gazan tabled a private member’s bill in the House of Commons this morning to designate residential school denialism as hate speech under Canada’s Criminal Code.
I'm surprised that more media aren't raising any alarms over a 15 year old BOY being shot dead by the RCMP after he called for help.. am I loosing my marbles or what the fuck??!!
In the last 11 days in Canada FOUR Indigenous People, including a youth, were killed by POLICE- the latest killing happened yesterday:
-August 30 Hoss Lightning, 15, shot and killed by RCMP
-September 3, Tammy Bateman, struck (with cruiser) and killed by Winnipeg police
-Sunday, September 8, RCMP shoot and kill Elsipogtog First Nation man, N.B.
-Also on Sunday, an unnamed man from Atahkakoop Cree Nation in northern Saskatchewan died in hospital after being shot by RCMP.
I’ve been reporting on this crisis for years. Indigenous Peoples are being systematically murdered in various ways and the police are at the helm of one of them.
