If you have a project in crypto, saying you don't have incentives or an airdrop simply doesn't work.

Figuring out how to manage community expectations in crypto is damn hard since part of the meta has been straight up lies about airdrops.

The threshold for most firms is $100K at minimum otherwise it is near impossible to get law enforcement (LE) assigned to a case.

Say you lost $10.

I get the stolen funds frozen at a service or exchange.

No LE is willing to work that case and no lawyer is either.

There’s literally nothing I could possibly do in that scenario to get the funds returned.

BUT if you lost $10 and there’s hundreds of other victims and the total is $100K+ you have a better chance of someone taking the case.

It’s just the unfortunate reality of the world.

When you receive 30+ requests for help per day as a single person it’s not feasible to help every person.

I am only going to reply if I think the case is interesting and there’s a higher likelihood of success.

I am also moving away from public goods work and have set a lot more boundaries as otherwise you get taken advantage of by people.

I had to set up a new bank account recently.

Took an in-person meeting that lasted over an hour. Was told to walk around, get a coffee, and then come back, because processing took another hour or so.

I went home and generated half a billion bitcoin addresses in about a minute out of spite.

Does @ProtonMail have an unpatchable email spam filter bypass by using an account's public PGP key?

Every account has a public PGP key that can be used to encrypt emails. This prevents the service provider from reading the content, straight forward. But, this also means that spammers can use the same encryption to bypass content-based spam filters.

I've never considered weaponizing PGP like this before.

Am I missing something?

There are three layers of defense you want around your home.

Photonic. Motion activated lights are great, cheap, and very useful. Cameras as well are well advised.

Acoustic. An alarm system, glass break alarms, or even just a good old fashioned dog are great to both alert you, as well as scare off skittish buglers.

Ballistic. If the above fail, and they're coming in no matter how much noise they're making, being able to defend yourself is your last hope.

Daily reminder that there are very few regulators for crypto exchanges.

The few that there are are not as sophisticated as you'd think for an industry of this size.

Most exchanges operate with impeccable respect for customer deposits, but if they don't, and there is any small issue, it can snowball dangerously quick.

If you as a company are investing in your community, make sure to invest in protecting it.

An account compromise can erode good will, lose core community members money, and impact your company's reputation.
