The overriding reason why former Soviet republics (the Baltic States) and former Warsaw Pact states (Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia) joined NATO is simple: They wanted an insurance policy to avoid the prospect of being swallowed up by the #Russian Federation. That's it, plain and simple.

Russians refer to former Soviet republics as their "Near Abroad"; Putin and others in his government have made very clear in public statements and in writing that these former republics are not sovereign states. (Something a Chinese ambassador recently said as well about Ukraine.) Given this, Ukraine's desire to join NATO was understandable.

#Ukraine was not a threat to Russia; it simply wanted to align itself economically with the EU, and join NATO to ensure the integrity of its borders. Russia had ALREADY illegally seized Crimea, and was waging a covert conflict in Donbas for years before Zelensky ever got elected. (Had Ukraine already been a NATO member in 2014, it is unthinkable that Russia would have sent its little green men to annex Crimea.)

Georgia had similar aspirations to join NATO -- for the same reasons the Baltic States already had. The Saakashvili government was rewarded for its aspirations by a Russian invasion which seized (and still occupies) 20% of Georgian territory.

Ukraine is just as much a sovereign state as any of the other 194 countries in the world. Yeltsin's government did not challenge that sovereignty, and in fact Russia signed the 1994 Budapest Memorandum guaranteeing the sovereignty of Ukraine's borders in exchange for Ukraine surrendering nuclear weapons.

Blaming the West and/or Ukraine for this war makes no sense at all. There are plenty of OTHER books that make a compelling case for my statement. I suggest that you read a few of them.
