In polar regions, increased cloud coverage has a warming effect since it reduces longwave radiation lost to space. We find that iodine oxoacids enhance the rate of formation of cloud seeds by 10- to 10,000-fold compared with previous understanding.

@Chyld@wonderofscience It works for the sun and every single other star in the sky. In your "reasoning", all stars are at the same distance as the moon. And indeed observing Moon and Sun, we do see them round...
🥳🎉Congratulation @lisab0501 for your entire journey through your Ph.D. 👩🔬It was an immense pleasure to work with you. You did an excellent defense.🏆 I wish you all the best for your future. And thanks Karine @LampPhysique for being Lisa´s opponent.

Congratulation to Yannick Bras for your successful Ph.D. defense. Your observations and parameterizations of the #INP properties from the south-western pacific ocean and from remote mountains are very valuable. I really enjoyed being your external examiner.
In our new CLOUD paper, we investigate upper tropospheric atmospheric conditions. We found a strong synergy between nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and ammonia gases to form new particles that can then act as ice nuclei. Congratulation @_Mingyi_Wang_ et al.

#Snowcrystal needs an ice nuclei particle (#INP) to form. Boreal forests cover 14% of Earth's Land. @ZoeBrasseur et al. (ACP) introduce the HyICE campaign which investigates INP sources in boreal forests, from the tree to the free atmosphere. Congratulation Zoe on your 1st paper!
Congratulations to Jörg Wieder for his successful PhD defence. His work brings us one step forward in the understanding of the role of #INP in mixed-phase clouds. I really enjoyed being his external examiner & visiting the fabulous #ice laboratory at ETH in Switzerland.
We use the #CLOUDchamber at #CERN to investigate the role of aerosol particles on #IceNucleation. After 2 years of renovation, the experiment will resume in March. Yesterday, national Finnish TV showed live the advancement of the #CLOUDchamber (and also local Finnish weather)
After 2 months of studying ice nuclei particles at the (very) remote #ABOA research station in #Antarctica, our #INAR scientists have packed the instruments and are on their way back home. Congratulation on their excellent work.

Atmospheric ions are present through the all atmosphere. In Beck et al. we flew an ion mass spectrometer from 150 m AGL up to the #FreeTroposphere to measure their vertical distribution and diurnal evolution above #SMEARII Finland @GlobalSMEAR@EGU_ACP
Congratulation for their Nobel Prize to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi for their pioneer work on climate modeling. #nobelprize2021
#Sarahandust is an effective ice nuclei seed. Well, it does not snow too much in the Sahara, however, #Sarahandust can travel, a lot. A few days ago it arrived in Finland, making the snow brown. Now with the melting of the snow, the Finish countryside transformed into “leopard”.
Ice crystal needs a seed on which to form. Could a #virus be the seed? Find it out in our Biogeoscience article :-) #INP#Atmosphere@AGUbiogeo@INAR_fin

Ocean surface is a major source of iodine. Today in Science we show using #CLOUDexperiment at #CERN that this molecule via oxidation forms new particles, that can act as cloud seed. Congratulation to Lance our PhD student leading this study. @HIPhysics

The shape of a #snowflake depends on the temperature and humidity in which it forms and grows. I took this picture yesterday in southern #Finland. It is a stellar dendrite #snowflake which has formed in a cloud with a high humidity and a temperature between -10¤C and -20¤C
Aircraft engine emits particles that can act as seeds for ice to form, and therefore cloud to form. We are currently studying the properties of these particles during @AnrUnreal campaign. Thanks @Ikortega for running our instrument during this special time. @INAR_fin@JoelBrito01
