Am working on a new EV article about Mechelen, the inn where Vermeer grew up. Was demolished in 1885 but I have now become aware of rarely seen pre-1885 fotos where Mechelen is actually visible! Still putting together all the pieces. Stay tuned Vermeer people!

Just received a tip from my 10-year old grandson about The Last Vermeer, a new film about the Vermeer forger Han van Meegeren. The film is based on a excellent read: The Man Who Made Vermeers (2009) , by Jonathan Lopez. Must see!

Correction, Mechelen was not torn down in 1851 but in 1885. Thanks to Peter for keeping me honest.

Just became aware that in June 2019, section of Mechelen had been uncovered during routine sewage maintenance. Vermeer lived in Mechelen from the age of 9, but Mechelen was torn down in 1851. Should have preserved it under glass but city officials said it was too expensive.

Washington NGA just acquired two Dutch still-life works;, one by one Frans Snyders and one by the obscure Adriaen Coorte. Together with Jacobus Vrel, art historians have been busy reevaluating Coorte who, until recently was considered a lesser talented painter. Justified?
