Travis KC-10 heading out of Colorado Springs a few years ago. Got some weird looks from the people in the cell phone lot when I walked up the hill with my camera to shoot over the fence. Used to it by now!
In its landing config, the L-1011 featured a system known as Direct Lift Control (DLC), which was quite innovative.
With the aircraft fully configured for landing, the spoilers would deploy to a baseline angle of 7°. Pushing the control yoke forward to command a steeper descent would raise the spoilers up to 14° without altering the aircraft's pitch attitude. Pulling back on the yoke would retract the spoilers toward their fully stowed position (0°), boosting lift and reducing the sink rate.
Thanks to the DLC, the L-1011 made super stable approaches with rock-solid pitch attitude and rewarded with "greaser" landings more often.
Did you know: A similar tech, called Auto-drag, exists in the Boeing 787. This function uses the ailerons and two outboard spoilers to automatically spoil lift/add drag when the airplane is above the glideslope. Autodrag works in conjunction with the autothrottle to automatically capture the vertical path without increasing or losing airspeed.
I keep telling my colleagues this like it’s breaking news, but the L-1011’s Direct Lift Control system was decades ahead of its time…
The L-1011 TriStar had one of the coolest forgotten features in aviation: Direct Lift Control.
Instead of pitching up/down to stay on the glideslope, the L-1011 used its spoilers to directly adjust lift, tiny spoiler movements gave smooth vertical corrections while the nose stayed rock-solid.
It basically “rode the beam” like no other wide-body of its era.
I mean, not everyone is a fan of this account, and that’s exactly as it should be.
For the record though, I have Ph.D related to the aerodynamic design high lift systems for civil transport aircraft, and my point was, ‘the answer isn’t obvious’
