🚨 Pep Guardiola on Lionel Messi’s Hat-Trick at the Worldcup.
I couldn’t miss the match because Messi was playing. I had to switch the channel from golf immediately to watch him.
I’m both confused and not surprised (laughs). Messi scoring a hat-trick? Yes, because he prefers to assist more than scoring himself. But I wasn’t surprised - especially because one of his goals was cancelled in the first minute. If not offside, it could easily have been four.
I do call him king Leo because he's the greatest player ever.
Gareth Bale on Lionel Messi’s masterclass against Algeria:
🗣️ “I watched the game last night and honestly, I was just sitting there shaking my head at some of the things Lionel Messi was doing on that football pitch.
“At 38 years old, most players are trying to manage games and conserve energy, but Messi is still out there scoring hat-tricks, breaking records, and completely dominating World Cup matches.”
“What amazed me most wasn't even the goals themselves, it was the way he controlled everything around him. The tempo, the space, the pressure, the emotion of the game... everything seemed to move according to his rhythm.”
“There were moments where Algeria actually defended well, closed the spaces, and did almost everything right, but somehow Messi still found solutions that nobody else in the stadium could see.”
“I've played against some of the greatest players in football history, and I've been fortunate enough to share the pitch with incredible talents, but watching Messi is a completely different experience.”
“Sometimes you look at a player and admire him. With Messi, sometimes you watch him and genuinely wonder if he sees a different version of the game from everyone else.”
“I won't lie, every footballer dreams of playing alongside players who make the game easier, and Messi is probably the ultimate example of that. I would have loved the opportunity to play with him at some point in my career.”
“Because when you watch a performance like the one he produced against Algeria last night, you realise you are not just watching a great footballer... you are watching one of the most extraordinary players the sport will ever see.”

Didier Deschamps on Lionel Messi matching Klose’s World Cup record after his hat-trick vs Algeria:
🗣️ “What Lionel Messi is doing right now is not something you analyse like normal football anymore… it is something you just witness and accept as greatness unfolding in real time.”
“As a coach, you spend days preparing for structure, for control, for balance… and then a player like him steps onto the pitch and completely bends all of that in ways you cannot fully plan for.”
“To match Miroslav Klose’s World Cup record with a hat-trick in one match, against a strong Algeria side, at this stage of his career… it is not just performance anymore, it is football history being rewritten in front of us.”
“I’ve faced top teams, top players, finals, pressure moments… but the way he creates danger from nothing, over and over again, is something that removes all comfort from an opponent.”
“You can defend perfectly for 89 minutes, stay compact, stay disciplined… and then in one second, he produces something that destroys everything you built.”
“At some point, you realise it is not about stopping him completely… it is about trying to limit the damage he is capable of doing in a single moment.”
“What makes it even more unbelievable is the mentality he does not play like someone chasing records… he plays like someone who is still hungry for more even after breaking everything.”
“I have to be honest… in football, there are great players, there are legends… and then there is Messi doing things that feel almost impossible to repeat.”
Wayne Rooney on Lionel Messi crying after scoring in Argentina’s opening World Cup game:
🗣️ “That image tells you everything about what football means to Lionel Messi.”
“People see the trophies, the records, the fame... but they don't always see the emotion and pressure that comes with carrying a nation’s hopes.”
“This is his sixth World Cup, he has achieved almost everything in football, yet scoring for Argentina on this stage still brings tears to his eyes.”
“That’s because it means something. It’s not about statistics, it’s about passion, pride, and representing your country.”
“When a player like Messi cries after a goal, you realise he still loves the game as much as he did as a kid.”
“Moments like this are why football is the greatest sport in the world.”
