Check out my first first-author manuscript! I looked to see how Listeria infection of trophoblasts (One of the primary cell types of the placenta) changes the extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by those cells.

President Biden's announcement today about student loan debt relief has upset some people who believe it's unfair. I acknowledge that resentment, and also, while we're on the subject of unfairness, I have some thoughts for your consideration. (thread)
As for what's next, I am excited to announce that I will soon be starting as a post doc at University of Michigan with Dr. Mary O'Riordan @DrBadBug. I will continue to study host-pathogen interactions as I gain additional teaching and mentoring experience.
Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure (if you want to call it that) of defending my dissertation and earning a Ph.D. from @MSU_MMG. It has been an challenging and rewarding five years, and I am so thankful for everyone who helped and supported me along the way.
On the same day I defended, I also found out I won the the inaugural Mentor of the Year Award from the MSU Graduate Recruitment Initiative Team. This award is so meaningful to me, as I hope to support every scientist I can as I continue in my career.
This Friday at 9 am ET, I will be defending my dissertation to earn my Ph.D. from Michigan State. The presentation will be hybrid, and will be available for the public to watch online. If you are interested in watching me talk about placental infections, feel free to tune in!
THREAD: My professor at UCLA told our class that the "worst" part of the SCOTUS "story" was the fact that someone "leaked the draft opinion."
I raised my hand & told her the worst part was that Women's rights are being taken away & that the person who leaked the draft is a hero.
In light of the draft of a leaked majority Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade, I want to call your attention to the people that would be impacted most by the end of legalized abortion across the United States. 🧵:
Altogether, this work highlights some exciting new ideas about placental immunology, EV biology, and Listeria pathogenesis. It feels amazing to finally share years' worth of work that we have been excited about.

When we looked at the RNA of the EVs, we found a lot of genes that are involved in vasculature and placental development. Controlled inflammation is key for placental growth and is induced by EVs, so Listeria infections might be tapping into those processes.
